the fiddler of dooney
No, it was not because of the music... I had a gig last night and we played "sweet dreams", which has a very agressive touch when our band plays it. Accidently I moved my bow over a torch when I sang. Now my bowhair is sooty and I don´t know how to clean it. With water?
Yankee Fiddler
I wonder if you also weakened the bow hair when it passed over the fire? Yankee Fiddler
the fiddler of dooney
No, I think I moved it to fast to do any other harm to it.
Tom Quinn
Try removing the soot with mineral spirits on a rag. It will clean off the rosin also. Try to keep the mineral spirits off the bow.
David B
Alcohol will clean the hair. It will safely remove all rosin. Use alcohol prep pads as they are much safer (you don't want to drip any on the stick and disove varnish). A good proceedure is to comb the hair with a very fine comb (a flea plastic flea comb), wipe excess rosin away with a dry paper towel, a few swipes of the alcohol pad, and finally dry with a paper towel. This should do the trick providing that it is real hair and not synthetic.
