  1. Who are the primary customers buying at auctions like Tarisio (both the Fine Instruments listings and the T2 listings)? Are these primarily broker/dealers looking to sell to shops who in turn sell to customers; shops purchasing to sell directly to their customers; individuals looking to flip them for a small profit; and/or individuals looking to buy directly hoping to get a good deal even if they do not have the opportunity to play them in advance. I suppose the answer is all of the above, but which group are the majority of the buyers in? Many of the bidders seem to bid on a lot of listings and actively participate in every auction.
  2. Hi guys. There's a violin listed in present Tarisio New York online auction: "AN ENGLISH VIOLIN BY THOMAS SMITH, LONDON, 1778" Since it looks strange to me - neck width at nut looks quite wide to me, purfling is a fake, as well as neck graft, head execution is rather poor - it makes me doubting if it's fully Thomas Smith violin. What do you think? Was it rule in that period for purfling to be fake? JM
  3. Hello, folks! This violin is Lot 110 of Tarisio London. https://tarisio.com/auctions/auction/lot/?csid=2198732800&cpid=3511681024&filter_key=43a8942f0a9e29ad57ffe63929f7ce7a Although it has Ceruti label, the estimated year is way younger and it seems not to have any features of Ceruti. To my amateur eyes, it is somewhat german. Anyway it has two german certificates, and I like its back a lot. Any comments and opinions are appreciated. Thanks!
  4. Hello, I am looking for a bow from Tarisio auction. My budget is maximum $6000 (including premium), and it seems that there are some fine bows within the price range in this auction. The problem is I am not in the US, so commissioning is impossible. It would be much appreciated if someone shares his/her opinion, who commissioned bows at Tarisio New York. (Especially Lot54(Morizot), Lot81(Martin), Lot89(Thomassin)) Any recommendation is also welcome Thanks.
  5. Surprised to see this in the unsold lots with an after sales offer of 50,000 pounds. Did I miss something? There appeared to be no really significant condition issues as far as I could see. I would be grateful if anyone who handled this instrument would care to comment. I had expected to see this at least hitting close to the upper estimate? Martin?
  6. Probably most of you have already looked at this, but given the spirited bidding for the three Storioni's offered in London recently, this Storioni being offered by Tariso in New York looks interesting. The condition report is encouraging, even if it did start out life as a Viola. If anyone is going to the viewing I would be fascinated by your comments about how it sounds. Anybody here seen or handled it? Opinions?
  7. I've been search through posts in this forum for a quite long time and a lot of them are really helpful, really learned a lot over here. However now I feel like to actually register an acount to gather some opinions here. Scrolling through the new Feburary sale on Tarisio to find something that I can potentially get, after some modern Italians, this one suddenly caught my eyes: lot 174 https://tarisio.com/auctions/auction/lot/?csid=2198536192&cpid=3418554368&filter_key=96f09d9f4190b2efd4cd193578bfbea8&sCategory_ID=36 So I've been sending email to Tarisio and I've been told that they are simply uncertain about makers of any part of this instrument! btw as a composite the top is not original. Plus soundpost cracks on both front and back, whole bunch of inserts, cracks, I also kind of feel like it may not worth the estimate? In my opinion it does look pretty nice; with back and scroll look a bit like Amati school? So what's your opinion on it? First post ever, thank for any replys
  8. What might the winning bidder have seen that Tarisio apparently missed? The winning bid was way above T2's estimate... Just curious! https://t2-auctions.com/auctions/lot/?csid=2198519808&cpid=3421732864&filter_key=d5c60865a6a1d98f714a38c199e0aa11 Thanks
  9. What are your opinions about that one? https://t2-auctions.com/auctions/lot/?csid=2198519808&cpid=3421732864&filter_key=d5c60865a6a1d98f714a38c199e0aa11
  10. Most of you will likely have had the email and listened to the sound-clip from Tarisio's highlight lot. What do we think it is? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2fWwjVRr-0
  11. Sam has very kindly agreed to appear in a live Q&A session on Cozio today - we'll be talking to him about his approach to tone production and other issues relating to sound. Lots of interesting questions have already been submitted, which we'll be presenting to him over the course of the live chat. If you'd like to take part, it will be happening from 2pm GMT (9am EST) here. Hope you can join us!
  12. http://tarisio.com/auctions/auction/lot/?csid=2198077440&cpid=3279749120&filter_key=ad1a6b69bf83b1a4965df2a9a964db68 While perusing the latest Tarisio auction I found this interesting American violin lot 250. Unique purfling on the back, as well as interesting wood on the back. What do you think?
  13. This violin looks very narrow yet has a "normal" length. I am guessing this was built as a violin piccolo? http://tarisio.com/pages/auction/auction_item.php?csid=2197962752&cpid=3225305088&sCategory_ID=36
