  1. At 16:10 of this video (it's great), Ray Chen showed that his bar-shaped shoulder rest was attached to his 1715 Strad using some kind of glue. Judging from the magnet-like action of the attachment, I thought the glue must be very strong (i.e., unlike the suction-cup type of "glue" used by AcoustaGrip). Ray said that it is a special type of glue that does not harm the varnish. Does anyone know what kind of glue is that? Henry
  2. A major print catalog and internet stringed instrument reseller says on their website that, due to high demand overwhelming the manufacturer's production capacity, these US$985.00 shoulder rests are out of stock until March. http://www.pirastro.com/public_pirastro/pages/en/Pirastro-KorfkerCradle-00001/ $985.00 for a shoulder rest? (!) Has anyone here experienced these? Are they that good? (I personally don't use a shoulder rest, so there's probably not one of these in my future anytime soon, or even anytime soon thereafter.) It seems that money just ain't what it used to be, at least not in the violin world.
  3. By chance I happened to notice an interesting effect of the shoulder rest today when playing my #4 Guarneri copy. I noticed that the sound was strangely nasal ... l didn't like it. First I thought that this could be due to the room acoustic, this was in an old summer cottage where the acoustics was unfamiliar, cold the room dampen higher frequencies causing the nasal sound? I happened to notice that I had brought two shoulder rests with me, this was a shoulder rest I seldom use. When switching to the ordinary shoulder rest or playing without the shoulder rest the nasality disappeared. After some experimentation I noticed that I normally use the shoulder rest slightly diagonally over the bottom. The size of the other shoulder rest was different causing me to mount it perpendicular to the 'spine' of the violin across the lower bouts. This seemed to cause the nasality. When making the mounting more diagonal the sound brightened and the normal sound of the violin returned. Question: Is this a well known effect?
  4. Hello to all again! My daughter is four and shall start to take violin lessons soon. I am looking for shoulder rest for her, but cannot decide on which one to get: bon musica or play on air junior I have Bon Musica for myself and like it, but am afraid that it might be too "rigid" for the violin movement on her shoulder sine she just starts. Can you recommend a shoulder rest for a young beginner? Many thanks in advance! miles
