Here's a thought that has occurred to me many times: "gee, I'd like to study x instrument in y museum or collection, I should check if there are CT scans of it" Much more often than not, there are not scans of the instrument in question. I realize that this is the case for a reason, namely that it's expensive to get access to the instrument, the equipment, and the few people with the specific knowledge required to take and render usable scans. I am sure that many of you have experienced the same thing. Perhaps if enough people come together, though, we could do something about it. P

I want to know which CAD tools you use. How steep is the learning curve? Did you take a course? Or do you have assistance from a professional? What's the cost? I learned Euclidean geometry by use of compass and ruler. It would be nice to be able to illustrate my ideas in this forum and elsewhere. Often a drawing says more than words. So, please help me get my ideas across. I am thinking of the illustrations by Kevin Kelly, Addie, David Beard, F. Denis etc. How do you do it?

As I was staring recently at tables of measurements of some rather ‘Nice’ Cremonese instruments, it struck me that the numbers that make up a violin are (or could in theory be) prime. For example: Body length: 353 Upper bout width: 167 Center bout width: 109 Lower bout width: 211 Distance between upper eyes of FFs: 41 Distance of lower lobe of FFs from edge: 13 Mensure: 193 (if you’re Del Gesu), or 197 (if you’re making the ‘Soil’) Width of scroll: 41 Narrowest point of scroll: 11 Length of scroll: 103 Neck length: 13 (cm) Coincidence?
