We occasionally see on older instruments a repair that has moved the position of the f-hole nicks. From the perspective of modern experience, any thoughts on how the old nicks might have been "filled in"? Or are we just talking about a very small patch job? Perhaps Austin Powers' last observation in this clip?

How common is this and is there any region that has this style as their signature? Thanks for any feedback

So far, the easy categories seem to be A Stradivari, Guarneri dG, "amateur", "Brescian", and Nicolo Amati. And when wrong about a N. Amati I widen the acceptable field of bullseye to Amati family and apprentices. If still wrong, at least I've usually got Cremonese work nailed down, and usually to the right century. In other words, it's a fun game and one which I'd like to get better at. Any tips? (Yes I read Roger's article on the topic, and I'm getting better at seeing Guadagnini holes thanks also to Roger) Also, would enjoy reading acoustic ideas about f-holes, an example being Zyg's sugge

Thanks to MN...I've re-developed an eBay browsing habit I thought I was done with... Having clarified that...are the f-holes on this violin legit and deliberate...or did someone muck up on the originals and this is a cover-up? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/old-violin-4-4-geige-viola-cello-fiddle-fullsize-label-CARLO-GIUSEPPE-TESTORE-/171156206348?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item27d9b4730c ...and what happened to Caspace? I miss him. ***p.s. Why is there purfling on the front but not the back?
