  1. Hello guys ! I'm considering to buy this violin labeled "Ch. J. B. Collin-Mézin Luthier á Paris Rue du Faub Poissonnière No. 29" for a very good price. The seller said he couldn't see any hand written signature or date....Maybe the violin is dusted or he just don''t where to look, I dunno..... He said the violin is made around 1900 and length of back is 359mm. Next week I''m going to see the violin and I will try it, but I will be very grateful if you guys give your opinion about this violin''s authenticity . P.S. I'm sorry about the bad pictures, but this is what he send to me.
  2. Collin-Mezin cello?

The real deal, or a knock-off? I don't like the sound of the text describing it, but perhaps someone has feedback. I have my suspicions... Seller is france69. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Old-Cello-with-French-COLLIN-MEZIN-1924-label-and-signature-/142233406686?hash=item211dc58cde:g:KIQAAOSwUKxYbA8o
  3. Good morning In brief, I have recently come into possession of a violin claiming to be a 1898 Collin-Mezin. However, I'm not 100% convinced by this, mainly due to the varnish. I own an authentic Collin-Mezin from 1890s and it has an almost golden varnish that shows off the woodgrain beneath (see the two photos of the violins together). The new one, however, is darker and not well-finished (there is even a fingerprint in it!) Also it is untidy where the ribs meet the face and back. All this could be due to an inexpert luthier opening her up and having a crack at redoing the finish, I don't know. The label and pencil signature look okay, though I'm pinning nothing on that. The black inking on the scroll and rib joins, though, are somewhat more convincing. I have only had access to one other C-M so I'm in the dark here. I'm not even knowledgeable enough to know whether it's based on a Strad, del Gesu or some other shape... I would massively appreciate any help you could give me on deciding whether this is authentic or not. Thank you Images are in the following dropbox folder: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/iwbroizpj3sdpi9/AACrTbhAJGMKSbjmmriYKOWSa?dl=0 I had hoped the light would be better so I have used ambient light (murky sunlight!) and flash to give as good a representation of colour as I can.
  4. Hi, Ok, I finally figured out how to post new topic. I come across a very good sound 1878 J. B. Collin-Mezin Fils, and a bit not sure if it is the real thing beside the vendor claims they have a certificate. The label listed: Ch. J. B. COLLIN-MEZIN Fils Luthier a Paris Rue du Faub g Poissonniere No. 10 On the right side of No. 10 there is a black circle, in which a cross symbol on top, letters CM at bottom. Numbers 1878 written vertically on the right side of the label It has a one piece back Varnish consistence with Collin-Mezin violin during that time The neck is a ted short proportion-wise Question is I cannot find signature or stamp inside the violin. Is it even possible that it is a real JB Collin-Mezin? Any input is appreciated. Nils
  5. Collin-Mezin or Schonbach box?

Hello everyone, I was offered a violin by a man from whom I bought (in an auction) another violin in the past. Unfortunatelly I cannot look at the instrument in person, I only have some snaps of it. What do you think, could it be a real Collin-Mezin, or is it just a cheap Schonbach (or Mirecourt) VSO? Can anyone give me his/her opinion about it? Thanks in advance. BTW, there is only the signature on the label inside the violin, nothing else... The requested amount is pretty high, so I am rather hesitant... Martin
