  1. Hello varnish specialists! A violinist wants to order one of my cases, and wishes that the case be lined in a polyester velour of his liking. He has a Strad and a Vuillaume, and personally I'm worried about the reaction that the material may have with the varnish in hot weather. Can anyone provide me with personal experiences? Horror stories? Or is polyester OK? Many thanks in advance!
  2. I brought a gordge violin case recently and it looks a bit suspicious. It does not have a traditional sliding lock, which seems a bit suspicious. Any ideas?
  3. Not likely - to my knowledge it’s never been done before. Until now. The International Violin Making School of Cremona kindly offered me their X-ray lab to examine the circa 1680 “Milan” Stradivari case and try to understand how it was made. The resulting images are being studied, for future publication, but already many interesting features are appearing. For example, the fact that the curved perimeter around the body of the violin is made of multiple blocks of spruce glued together in such a way to ensure that the grain is always crosswise, a lightweight and effective way to protect the violin from bumps. Don't worry about the nails - they go into the top and bottom panels and are thus invisible (in fact only visible in the x-ray image). Unprecedented new light on a distant past!
  4. Lately I've been thinking of upgrading my viola case, as the one I have I believe offers not much protection. It is one of those cases made of natural fibres, the top used to press onto the bridge (I subsequently pushed inside the foam in that area to provide some clearance) and also the suspension system I believe is flawed, or it would only work with a smaller viola than mine (mine is 16.5'', the case supposedly fits all sizes), considering the base of the neck does not rest on the cushion (it is too low), resulting in the scroll resting on the bottom instead of being suspended in the air. When I bought it I didn't know and I had limited choices... For a month or so, I had been carrying the viola in a cardboard box with a DIY strap! I even got it on the plane like that. Anyway, that's a big enough prologue. Do you have any recommendations for good quality cases, preferably dart-shaped or viola-shaped, and definitely light-weight, for a 16.5'' viola? Not too expensive, I definitely cannot get a Musafia, but you could mention anything that comes to mind. Anything easily available in the EU is a plus... I can't seem to find Bobelocks, for example, around here and I don't think it's a good idea to order from the US, due to the added costs. I have no need for much space inside, I do not use a shoulder rest. Also, I'd like to mention that I have read the posts on the 'other site', written by Mr Musafia, regarding carbon fiber cases, which really shattered my view of them, but I still haven't ruled them out as I can't seem to find a good dart-shaped case. Sorry if the topic has been beaten to death, just looking for new ideas! EDIT: Dart-shaped & viola-shaped. Anything not huge.
  5. I thought of a simple way to check clearance at the bridge inside a closed case. Wish I thought of it before, but if anyone has a better way I'd love to know. Pretty common concern, but I've usually relied on wear patterns and my best guess. To check the clearance I used a piece of drafting tape with a second piece folded over so the middle was not sticky. I used this to create a pocket that a short piece of wood (I used a tongue depressor) can slide up and down with little resistance when taped against the back of the bridge. End result is that I can close the case and check the clearance. This bridge broke because the case it was kept in makes contact with the bridge when it is closed, but before recommending a replacement I wanted to know there was plenty of space. Also notable, leaning hard on the cover of the case (it's a foam case for a cheap cello) depressed the case 5mm towards the bridge.
  6. Hello everyone! I have a little question… Last year I came across a violin case at a local antique shop. It's sign painted 'The Hot Club Of France' with the name 'S. Grappelly'. It looked interesting, I vaguely knew the name and had been looking for cheap violin case, so I bought it. ​So, I did a little more research about obviously read up on the Hot Club of France and Stephane Grappelli. All this got me thinking about the possibility that the case used to belong to him. The case does look of the right age, and after doing some reading I know that Stephane Grappelli used to spell his name with a Y, not an I. I know it's a long shot, but I thought it would be worth getting it looked at. So, can anyone offer any advice as to how I can get this looked at? Or could anyone offer any more information?   8. Hello, I recently acquired a violin with a somewhat unusual case. The case is solid wood, with metal (?) latches. The ball feet are made of wood, too. The inside is quite nice, given the age. It is lined with a green fabric (velvet?). Before creating an account, I would sometimes lurk in here. I wanted, especially, the input of GlennYorkPA. I've read some of his posts regarding violin cases. (I haven't read his book, yet. Sorry! ) I would be glad to hear information from anyone! I have taken many pictures.
