  1. Hi all, I'm a guitarist who would love to have a nice violin on hand for recording of subtle atmospheric bits on my tunes. I'm not a player but, who knows? Maybe some day I will be. Or, just keep it on hand around the house and see if it catches my daughter's interest? I've been eyeing this old violin but have no idea if it's worth the $225 asking price, and was told all the experts hang out on this forum, so here I am! By the way, I am a die-hard fan of antique instruments and would much prefer something old and nicked up that sounds nice, versus a modern instrument that sounds nice- just how I'm built. I also realize this one might require some additional investment for setup, but I'm not seeing any cracks or hairlines that require work so hopefully that wouldn't require much additional outlay. The label say "Paris 1874" and a name I can't find any info on: Jarquet Boquet. I understand there was an 18th century builder Jacques Boquet, but this name is hyphenated, and the first name on the label looks like it has the letter "r" and DEFINITELY a "t" at the end (it's identical to the last letter in "Boquet". Someone at another forum speculated the label was created by lead type and the letters taken from, or fell into, the adjacent box (if that's the case, I suppose it doesn't reflect well on the builder's QC!) I'd love if any of your serious collectors of antique fiddles can provide your thoughts on this mysterious label. Does it seem to be at least a veritable 1874 violin and good quality instrument, based on f-holes, varnish, and other details I'm not too familiar with? Thanks!
  2. So I was pasted down my grandmas violin from my dad and he doesn’t know much a bout the violin other then his mom gave it to him when he was little hoping he would learn violin. He never did. I have learned violin so he though he should give it to me. I started doing some research on the violin as it looks unique. I found some information online about the violins of hope. I read that these violins are from the Holocaust. I don’t know if someone in my family played it in the Holocaust or how someone in my family received the violin if it was from out of our family. My grandmas side of the family ( my dads side ) came to America from Germany. I know I have a lot of German in my ancestry as I do a lot of ancestry.com and I did 23 and me as well. Doesn’t anyone have any more information on the violins of hope, maybe how many are them are there ? What there value is ? The only marking inside the F hole is “ Germany “ no serial number or any other words. The violins case has a label “ George Barton music company quality Instruments Minneapolis Minn “ so I don’t know if there’s potentially a place the violin was boughten from after the Holocaust or if it’s just where the violin was bought from or if the case is even relevant to the violin or not I don’t know. But any information on the violin and history to it , value , answers . I would love some more information.

  5. I have a 450 year old Italian violin .. anyone knowledgeable in this ?
  6. Gentlemen, Please help me somehow. I have an old antique violin, possibly 250-300 years old. Possibly Tononi's (not sure) slim chances that it is Stradivarius (not the same stamp). Back stamp is a flower-like and it is on two places. Both are in axes with the violin's neck. First one is next to it (top of the upper bout) and second down at the bottom of the (lower bout). I would like to know where I can find more information about best estimators for these instruments (location, telephone, website if they have)? There are lots of frauds out there and I really don't want to waste my time with them. Thank you for helping me. Alexionov
