  1. Hi guys - section leader here for a London non-pro orchestra that has programmed the Kodály next concert. Any idea how to lead a section to play the passage at 487 well? Syncopations are quite quick...
  2. Watching a video on youtube, I started wondering. One cannot say first violins are more important than second violins, as both parts are absolutely essential. Based on what, does major orchestras assign players to certain sections? Must you audition for first or second? Many people assume that 2nd violins are inferior to the first violins. Do they take the best players and put them on first violin? How do they sort them?
  3. Dear colleagues, I am directing two summer programs for high school and college undergrad/graduate students, and have merit and need-based scholarship funding available. If you are interested, please check out the sites and send me a message! The Capistrano String Institute takes place from July 5-11, 2015, and offers programs for students working on solo repertoire including lessons, performance classes, masterclasses, and rehearsals/performances with a full symphony orchestra led by professional orchestra musicians from around the US. There is also a teacher development workshop, featuring Kerstin Wartberg, the author of Step by Step and Recital Training who is joining us from Germany. www.capostrings.org The Capistrano Chamber Music International Festival takes place from July 26-August 1, and is a week-long intensive program for students interested in string quartets and piano chamber music with strings. Our exceptional artist faculty includes William Fitzpatrick, Yoko Matsuda, Minji Noh, Kookhee Hong, and the 2014 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition Grand Prize Winners, the Telegraph String Quartet from San Francisco, California. In addition to our regular participant program for K-12 and college students, there is a full fellowship Young Artist Program for advanced musicians who wish to study, perform, and teach chamber music in collaboration with our artist faculty. www.capochambermusic.org We are especially prepared for families to attend our summer programs, as we offer local transportation, child care, practice partners for younger students, and on-campus meals at very economical rates. I look forward to hearing from potential participants and their teachers! Best wishes, Gene Wie, Artistic Director Capistrano Chamber Music
  4. This is definitely something different than what Im used to seeing from Chamber orchestras. What do you think? This is how I would imagine it would look if Joshua Bell and Lindsey Stirling came together, made a few clones of themselves, and formed an orchestra. (I'm not against this type of chamber orchestra performance though. Whatever works to sell tickets I suppose. )
  5. I have friends in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and their ranks populate ours. The agreement just reached, the capitulations made by the musicians are traumatic, and unfairly felt. The orchestra is too small for its administration. The players offered a generous deal weeks and weeks ago. The new concessions they've made show just how dedicated they are to a world class ensemble in Atlanta. J_______ H________ (cellist) says: "This unfair contract begins the long fight to not only bring this orchestra back to where it was and deserves to be, but to ensure that it doesn't happen again by finding a leadership that does, in fact, lead. Not cut, lie, hide or make excuses - LEAD. Such a shift will take everyone playing their part (on and off the stage), and I look forward to the positive changes we will bring to this orchestra! Onward!!" -------------------------------------------------- If you haven't been following the story, educate yourself. Atlanta is a first-rate city, it should treat its first-rate musicians with the respect they deserve.
