Hi everyone, I bought a nice violin from an auction two years ago, it sounds excellent, but the origin is unknown. I once showed some pictures to one of the most authorized experts in the business, he said he doesn't remember he has seen anything similar, but says it looks very nice. My violin maker says it looks Bohemian, some friends say German. Anyways, please share your opinions, I thank you in advance. P.S, there is a little hole in the right side F-hole, a couple millimeters deep. Does it look like a worm hole or it looks like it's made by someone?

Hello! I have had this violin for a little while and I would like to know more about it. On the inside it says “Tone ____ and Repaired by A.W Van Dorsten, No. 542 Maker Dec. 1916” I also am really interested in the design on the back, and would like to know more about who could have put the design on it, and if it was common to have that design. Can anyone tell me if this is an authentic Bisiach violin? This was passed down to my grandmother who gave it to me to get appraised. If it is authentic, how much could this be worth?

So I was pasted down my grandmas violin from my dad and he doesn’t know much a bout the violin other then his mom gave it to him when he was little hoping he would learn violin. He never did. I have learned violin so he though he should give it to me. I started doing some research on the violin as it looks unique. I found some information online about the violins of hope. I read that these violins are from the Holocaust. I don’t know if someone in my family played it in the Holocaust or how someone in my family received the violin if it was from out of our family. My grandmas side of the family ( my dads side ) came to America from Germany. I know I have a lot of German in my ancestry as I do a lot of ancestry.com and I did 23 and me as well. Doesn’t anyone have any more information on the violins of hope, maybe how many are them are there ? What there value is ? The only marking inside the F hole is “ Germany “ no serial number or any other words. The violins case has a label “ George Barton music company quality Instruments Minneapolis Minn “ so I don’t know if there’s potentially a place the violin was boughten from after the Holocaust or if it’s just where the violin was bought from or if the case is even relevant to the violin or not I don’t know. But any information on the violin and history to it , value , answers . I would love some more information.

Anyone recognize this maker stamp? The label is entirely illegible, the stamp bears the letters C G. The instrument is of very good quality, mid to late 19th century. I suspect one of the Gands, but have yet to find evidence of this stamp in anything.

I am confused. I have a violin with a label "BERTOLINI a Paris" . It is a larger violin with a dark red varnish and purling of ebony and mother of pearl. It has a large full sound. I read somewhere that Bertolini is not the same as Bertholini(with and H), however I see alot of violins listed as both Bertolini and Bertholini interchangeably. One appaiser told me it was worth about $1,500. Does anyone know if the two are different?

Hello, first time poster here! To the best of my knowledge, my first 4/4 violin was made by a luthier named Diederik A Van Hamel. I know he made a few other instruments, mostly violins but some violas as well. I remember seeing a few throughout high school, but I am curious to know who else has one or has seen one. The defining characteristic is an upside down tulip just below the back button. I used to have more information regarding his instruments, but seeing as that was nearly 15 years ago and I was a teenager, I didn't really care about such things. Hello all, Just wondering if anyone out there is eyeing the current Amati.com auction listings. I am a complete novice but have seen a few nice bows and violins. Any opinions/thoughts on the following lots. I haven’t been able to attend the viewings so going on my gut instincts. Lot. 73 I really like the look of this bow and the low reserve suggests it will hit a bidding frenzy? My hunch is it’s a nice JTL bow. Slight warping can be straightened so not an issue. I think it will reach about 1,200 euros (my guess) Frog looks nice and flush. good condition. Lovely head in my opinion. Wood looks to be good quality from my eyes. Lot. 71 Lovely looking Hill bow. Clean repair to back of head. So for a player it will be a good value. Good Broken bows are still sought after so I think this will get a good price. I have a repaired Lamy pere that I bought on the cheap and works a treat. Lot 65, 66 two nice childrens violins. I think both will have a good tone. Bargain price for my students if I can win either of these. Problem is they sell for much higher in Japan so I will be up against the big guns. Lot 9. Betts violin looks nice although not sure of the starting price. This is just my humble beginners eye opinion. Any experts please feel free to offer pearls of wisdom. Thanks,

Missouri relatives, who know we're looking for a violin upgrade, enthusiastically alerted us of a March 14 "fine instruments" auction in St. Louis, sending us TV news clips, catalogue links, offers to go look, etc. Just curious why almost everything remained "unsold" (lots #40-118.. couple instruments went at or near "opening bid.") Were the estimates so far off on account of the wares? A collegue of mine is conducting a listening test using violin sound samples convolved with concert hall impulse responses to investigate the perception of intimacy in concert halls. The test takes about 10 mins and the results will be revealed when there are more than 50 responses. The response count is now 45, so not many responses are needed to fulfil the requirement.
