  1. Has anyone seen Chevalier, from Searchlight Pictures? A fascinating story, of Joseph Bologne... The only threads I could find were from 20 years or so ago, xania? What did you think? The actor spent quite a bit of time practicing violin, always good to hear...:-) Surprise no comments so far? 92% on Rotten Tomatoes!
  2. I would very much like to share with the world a record that my parents (Lesley Heller and James Burnham) made many years ago. Like so many, I believe they never received the recognition they deserved as first rate violinists. The album includes the Sarasate Navarra, Moszkowski Op. 71 for two violins and piano featuring pianist Mary Louise Vetrano, and Spohr Op. 67 in a minor for two violins. The recording can be found on Spotify here. The album is also available on Amazon and iTunes for purchase, if anyone so desires to support. Thank you
  3. Hello! I have had this violin for a little while and I would like to know more about it. On the inside it says “Tone ____ and Repaired by A.W Van Dorsten, No. 542 Maker Dec. 1916” I also am really interested in the design on the back, and would like to know more about who could have put the design on it, and if it was common to have that design. Thank you!
  4. Here is a really interesting Winterling violin that I had restored. It retains its original fittings, which is particularly cool because Winterling developed his own style of peg. I couldn't get the photos of the restoration to upload, but they can be found here.
  5. Hey My friend, I am Dr. Sachin Kumar Rohilla (A Musician, Violinist) from India. I sing Indian classical music and play Violin. i am creating a new course on "Indian classical Raga's on Violin" and i'd love your inputs. I am trying to help my all violinist, other instrumentalist and also the vocalist friends in terms of the Indian classical Raga's learning and getting to know them. I am just putting out a survey for you all, so that i can help and understand you in a better way possible. Please send this to all your other musician friends and also musician groups. So that if they are also facing some problem then they can also share their concerns. https://forms.gle/oF32ai6bhZtQMXky5 Thanks, Dr. Sachin Kumar Rohilla
  6. I had this posted in Pegbox, and it was suggested it more appropriately belongs in the Contemporary Maker's Gallery. So here it is, #23, based on Strad 1716. sound sample https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox0CYYB_fSs Alex Shlifer violinist with Greenville Symphony. T https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox0CYYB_fSs click for sound sample. All Romanian wood, OldWood ground and varnish. No extra charge to leaving tool marks showing here and there. I'v e been asked about the purfling, its maple/pear/maple, slightly wider than the standard purfling with the fiber layers.
  7. Hi there, This is probably a topic which has been discussed to death, but maybe some would still find it interesting. Who is your favorite modern (still living and playing) violinist, and why? Personally I love the way Joshua Bell plays. He is the only top violinist Ive seen live, and what an amazing performance it was. This was back in 2012 when he came to South-Africa. He performed the 4 Seasons, and the Bach Double violin concerto with a player here. Ive read that many people don't at all care for his interpretations of pieces, but I really enjoy listening to him. Another violinist I really like is Katica Illenyi. She is probably not as well known as the other popular violinists, but her control over the bow and vibrato is excellent! Here is a clip which is just beautiful. the way she plays the Czardas in another video is also astounding. Ofcourse there are many more I could mention, like Anne Akiko Meyers, Hilary Hahn, Maxim Vengerov, Itzhak Perlman, the list goes on and on. So who is your favorite, and why?
  8. Speaking of awesome violinists I went to school with... The Pulitzer committee went in a new direction this year, giving the award for music to a violinist named Caroline Shaw for her for 8 Voices. She's the youngest winner ever! NPR Article Hooray for giving the award to a performer!
