Recently i bought 3 violins in germany and it would be nice if someone knows something about one of the violins i got. Its a Joseph Guarnerius and has 3 tags inside. The backside is wonderfull and i assume the wood is birds eye.

This violin seemed pretty interesting to me because of the head carved on it, and corresponding a man who gave me it, it is more than 100 y.o. It has no labels, i changed strings G and D and it sounds pretty nice to me. I thought it may be one the Mittenwald violins, but i am not really sure because i am not an expert.

I have acquired a violin, probably English c.1800 with dark red varnish and a single line of light (possibly holly) purpling. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks

Hey everybody, I just got this beautiful violin from a luthier in Germany and am really wondering where it was probably built. I am especially impressed by its very clear, precise, direct and soloistic sound. However, since it does not have a label inside I have no indication where it's from. The luthier was guessing that it could be from France. Its corpus is rather oddly shaped, which is why I was hoping maybe one of you might have a better idea where it could have been built. Anyone recognize this maker stamp? The label is entirely illegible, the stamp bears the letters C G. The instrument is of very good quality, mid to late 19th century. I suspect one of the Gands, but have yet to find evidence of this stamp in anything.

I am currently looking at a violin for sale but don't really know if what I'm looking at is worth buying as I don't have experience in this sort of thing. I don't know if I'm looking at junk or something that is okay enough for an intermediate player to use. Price is about $100 usd. Some things I've noticed about it is that it doesn't have any purfling which in my mind is a red flag and the flare on the back is kind of diagonal. I'm certainly more used to seeing horizontal tiger stripes. The edge of the violin is also quite raised in a way I haven't seen before. Hello everyone, I would like you to see the pictures below; a friend of mine has been playing this violin for the last 10-15 years or so and nobody is sure about its origin: some people think it could be italian XVIII century but other say "french"... Top of violin is a modern replacement by a spanish violin maker so I´m only posting some pictures of back. I hope I will be able to upload some pictures of the scroll very soon if it helps but let´s see the back first. Any suggestions are wellcome as usually! Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, I've lurked on here for a while and now wonder if you may be able to assist with the ID of a violin I have recently had restored. Colin Adamson in Doune did a fantastic job restoring this for me and had a couple of thoughts on the origins of the instrument but nothing too concrete. Having issues uploading photos so have managed to attach one to this post and will maybe try to put a couple more up in a second post. The neck was replaced during the restoration as the original was too narrow to be of much use without some serious grafting required. Aside from that it was in reasonable condition. I'm still getting a feel for how it sounds, under my ear it is very sweet and projects well. Look forward to some constructive comments Thanks.

I recently fixed up this violin for a client. It is unlabeled and doesn't even show signs of ever having been labeled. It is obviously a Stainer body shape, and the antiqued finish and interior construction suggest a workshop violin (probably German, probably late 19th early 20th century), but from there it gets more interesting. The f holes are the most curious part to me and I was unable to find any exact matches. They most closely match those of Italian violins from the early to mid 1700s from makers such as Tecchler (1737), Tononi (1725), Carcassi (1752), Guidanti (1740), and Bairhoff (1757). I also found a Benjamin Banks from the late 1800s with similar style f holes, but none a perfect match. The holes are pretty short, parallel to the grain, fairly wide. The unique part though is the degree of turn in the upper ear of the holes. Another interesting point is that the long arch is not Stainer, but more Strad. The rather large ebony alignment pins are also a bit unusual, they are also present on the top. On a side note- when I received the violin, someone had converted it to have 5 sympathetic strings running under the fingerboard, through the bridge, and over the saddle, attached to hooks in the peg box and very small threaded pins in the end block like small piano pins for tuning. Sort of like a viola d'amore/violin hybrid. I thought some here would enjoy discussing this one. Those f holes kept me up a few nights for sure.

Hi, Any ideas on this one? Origin? Value? Is it just the usual again? I bought it with intend on restoring. The white/yellow stuff on the ribs seems to be some crack filler that someone used to repair worm damage, but never touched up. Someone also seem to have varnished over the top and sides with clear varnish, and it seems rather blotchy in some places. Should I just leave the varnish alone, or is there a way I can "spread" it around more? Some places you can see it is rather thick with colour varnish, and not at all even. I would definitely have to do quite a bit of touching up with the varnish, mainly in the parts where you can see the yellow/white stuff. The violin has, as you can see, a 1 piece back, 2 piece top, and 4 fake(?) corner blocks. The bass bar is carved in, and the top is scraped smooth. No gauge marks like with some unfinished tops.
