I have seen many threads where people ask for an ID of their random violin, and people always can chime in with ideas of places. This just amazes my untrained eye. So I have to wonder, what do you look for in a old French violin?

Hi there, I have a fixer-upper violin that I bought a while back. In the soundpost area, there seems to be a very small hairline crack developing. The crack doesnt go all the way through the top (from inside to outside). If you were to place the soundpost, it wouldnt be directly on the post, but a tiny bit to the side. Next to where the soundpost would be standing. My question is, do I need a full soundpost patch? I know it is hard without seeing the violin first hand, and posting pictures wouldnt help since you cant see the crack with the bare eye unless you were to bend the wood. Can you ever use a smaller soundpost patch, to make it more time/cost efficient? Fitting a smaller patch would be much easier than fitting a large patch. Thank you.

Hi all, I'm looking for a new violin, and I've taken a fancy to an old French violin. We've been told it's an 1880s Mirecourt, http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/carlos_rodriguez32/media/DSCF4924_zpsefd12e12.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 ( http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/carlos_rodriguez32/media/DSCF4923_zpsdc32ff68.jpg.html http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/carlos_rodriguez32/media/DSCF4920_zps5a7c7028.jpg.html http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/carlos_rodriguez32/media/DSCF4919_zps18dc64b9.jpg.html http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/carlos_rodriguez32/media/DSCF4915_zps591b3e36.jpg.html Could you please tell me what you think of it, and possibly find out the maker? The back measures 35.9 cm in height, it is very flat, and it gives a clear but warm, resonant sound. Thanks, Carlos R.

I have started drawings for a Strad mould G violin using Sacconi's The Secrets of Stradivari. The mould length is 354mm, which will yield a body length of approximately 362.5mm vice the standard 356mm. The resultant string stop length comes out to approximately199mm vice the standard 195mm. My concern is whether it's best to subtract the additional stop length from the neck and maintain standard string length; or, use a standard neck length thus increasing string length by 4mm; increase neck length to maintain a neck-to-stop 2:3 ratio which adds another 2.5mm to string length; or, scrap the G mould in favor of a standard 356 body design. Math and intuition indicate to me that adding 4mm to string length should not be an issue as the tension increase is only on the order of 1%. Seeking a 2:3 ratio with a 199 stop length would result in an additional 6.5mm to string length, with a total tension increase of about 1.5%. Any thoughts? Should I consider a slight increase in arching or decrease in string angle if the recommendation is to pursue model G with a 2:3 ratio? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you are able to offer me some advice. In an attempt to improve my skills and confidence in performing, I have decided to purchase a secondary viola for playing outdoors, possibly busking. My budget is limited but I still have the option to choose between oil and nitrocellulose finishes. My questions are: 1. Will a nitrocellulose finish be hardier, or more weatherproof, than an oil finish? 2. Will a nitro finish affect the sound negatively, whether new or after a few years? (Given that it's for outdoor playing, sound will probably not be too much of a problem since it will be hard to hear either way..but if I'm spending money on an instrument I might as well get one that will sound decent for a while.) 3. I'm planning to use synthetic strings, likely Dominants to start with. Any recommendations for a sound that carries outdoors? Thank you in advance!

HI all, I just bought this lovely (I think) old fiddle from an auction and I'm hoping for some guidance. These are my pictures (took them this afternoon) and I do actually own this instrument and have it in hand. I have deliberately NOT shown the label, but there is one. The bow is fractional, maybe 1/2 or 3/4 and is unlabeled as far as I can see. http://flic.kr/s/aHsjUkk3Yu First, what do you think I have here? Age? Origin? What is the basis for your thinking? Second, I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm getting myself into repair wise, and if it's worth doing. I have a fairly good idea of what needs to be done, but I'd like a second opinion from someone knowledgeable with no skin in the game. Thanks in advance. Enjoy the pix! MamaTorra

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Italian-violin-Ansaldo-Poggi-Bologna-1924-NO-RESERVE-/261390248816?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cdc12ab70 They seem wildly optimistic with the price. This looks nothing like any poggi I've ever seen, wood/varnish/wormanship all seem like they're mid-level factory work to me.

Hi, Ive been looking at this violin. Can someone perhaps give any info on origin, etc? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Riccardo-Antoniazzi-Milano-1897-Old-Italian-Labeled-Violin-Full-Size-/261405059445?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cdcf4a975 Im getting the idea it could be revarnished? The varnish seems to have alot of wear, but no scratches. Which leads me to think it was either touched up, or the varnish was redone and antiqued. Under the chinrest (where it should be), the wear and lack of varnish seems too neat/perfect. (I could be totally wrong here, though) Thank You.

This violin looks very narrow yet has a "normal" length. I am guessing this was built as a violin piccolo? http://tarisio.com/pages/auction/auction_item.php?csid=2197962752&cpid=3225305088&sCategory_ID=36

g'day from downudna. i'm new ere so i'll just intro meself, eh? it's woodie as in WoodSong: Bowed Instruments. i traded a few little fiddles in me teens n then--after violin time and phd time [english: melbourne uni of oz; time and narrative in fiction and fact; coupla o artikkles in top-pro journals; then a spot o the wobblies on the d-side]--n then, as i say, found meself in one of the local fiddle shops ere n reckoned to meself 'crikey, jonno!' i reckoned 'i could go back to this old prof n make meself a killin.' or at least enough o the old dribble to support meself in me dawnin old age. sose i soon found meself buyin up in a minor way, n straightaway at that, champ. then, and well pretty soon, i was doin the old google-fossik, and what av we ere eh? youse lot! by jingo, a place for fiddle-nerds across the planet! luvly. now i was lookin for a bit of sumthin on dutch fiddles n saw that there windin thread on the subject. but what hit me purple was yr few words on fiddlewords: ow to talk proper about fiddleparts n such. so ere's me rekkie. what say we combine our mighty forces, cross the globe-like, n crack this q-nut once n for all? just show a bit of interest n i'll cut the carp--unless ya like it--n sketch some parameters for proceedin as charged. whaddaya say, blokes n blokesses, eh? whaddaya say?

Hi all, I am new here. A friend has asked to get an old violin into playing condition, it looks interesting and isn't like the normal sort of German of French ones one sees. It has the scrap of a label I cant make out, but has 1742 on it. The text I can see looks printed. Its has been re-necked and had extensive repairs as it looks like it has been smashed at some time. It has no inlaid purfling but I think it has been inked. the scroll is elongated and rather crude with a wide pegbox. I took some photos but cannot see how to attach them. I clicked on image and lost all I had written! I am hoping to find out who made it. Nick

Hi there, Ive been trying quite a bit to work on my bow hold lately, to achive the best sound I can when playing (still quite a long way to go). So to do this, I try to watch as much videos as I can of soloists performing, to see all the different styles. What I noticed is that Itzhak Perlman, hardly uses his 4th finger on the bow. Mostly it just hovers in the air or gets curled up while playing. Is there a reason for this? Personal preference? Is this tecnhically correct? The sound he achives is quite amazing, so Im defenitely not doubting his skill or experience or anything. Just curious. Here is an example. Thank You.

Dear All, Recently my godfather passed away and left a fairly considerable number of assorted stringed instruments and bows to me in his will. Despite being a professional violinist I am woefully ignorant when it comes to identifying instruments and wondered whether anyone on here could help? These two violins seem to be the most recent in the collection and despite not having been played for about fifteen years are still incredibly responsive. Apologies for the quality of the photos, the lighting in the house is incredibly poor. Thanks in advance. http://imgur.com/a/jJwyj#0

I am new to the art of violin making. I am going to try first with a simple violin, this is really just a practice instrument, so I'm not bothering with using heat and pressure to bend the back and front, or stuff like that. I have a design to trace off of, (courtesy of Peter Horn) and I have the wood I need to construct the back and front. However, while I was talking with Peter, he did not give me actual rib measurements, so I'm floundering around looking for rib measurements. I understand that there are many different ways to make ribs, and that they vary from maker to maker. If someone could reply with a set of measurements (I can't find them on the web!) that would be great. Also, I'm still trying to figure out what a rib is. Looking through the first few pages of this forum, I found a drawing that had 6 blocks of wood at the top and bottom, and some at the corners near the middle. I think I have a good idea, but I'd like confirmation, as that piece of info is a prerequisite to making the ribs, obviously. A brief explanation would be excellent, thanks in advance if you do

Hi there, a few questions: 1. How do you achieve a perfect fingerboard/violin neck fit? It seems I always struggle with this. So far I've been using scrapers. Is there an easier/better way? I can never seem to get that 100% perfect fit. 2. How do you get rid of scratch marks on a fingerboard? Do you sand it with fine grid sandpaper? 3. What do you use to polish the fingerboards? Thank you. Hopefully someone can answer these, and maybe someone else can learn from it as well.

My faithful violin I have romantically called "The Tempest" (Der Sturm) for the singular back, full of waves and sudden (immaginary) flash of lighting The violin is unlabelled, so I would much appreciate an opinion of the expert, maybe about provenience and making style... Thanks in advance ! Mauro

Sanctus Seraphin 1752? A old lady is lending this violin to me. She does know much about it, just that it came from her father. It needs a new bridge and a soundpost, so it is hard to tell how it sounds right now. Te label says something like: Sanctus Seraphin Utinensis fecit 1752 From what I read online, it looks like a french copy from the 19th century. But I do not understand much about it. It is interesting that looks like the original scroll was baroque and they changed it. What do you think? All the pictures are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0hwq27r4ak5x6eo/HjSwgxjBVv Thank you for any insight!

Hi there, Can someone perhaps offer their opinions on this violin? It came with a beautiful leather case which I will post pictures of tomorrow. In the case was a paper which shows a diagram of the interior of the violin. This paper was written and drawn by the last person who repaired it. On this paper, it says Violin made October 26, 1823. It also says Repaired July 23 1839. It also says "Taken to pieces by Wheatley", and with a signature, and dated Nov 29 1834. This is all written inside the violin aswell apparently. The diagram shows where it is written on the interior. About the violin: Lovely 1 piece maple back Grafted scroll (You can zoom in on the pictures to see the graft line. Nail in the button, and below the button (where the neck block is) Ebony fingerboard Inlaid Purfling Varnish worn/gone where your palm would be when playing up in high positions On the inside are a few cleats running along cracks, aswell as a soundpost patch. Any idea where this was made, if the date is legit, and what its value would be once repaired? Also can a specific model be identified on which it has been made? It has no label unfortunately, but as I mentioned above it says Violin made October 26 1823 on the inside. Here are some pictures. Feel free to request more (a specific angle) I also apologize for the blurryness on some photos, I took these pictures in a hurry. Thank You.
