  1. Hello, I have found old violin which belonged to my grandfather. I do not understand instruments and therefore I would like to ask you for help. I have found on the web that there are many copies of these Joseph Guarnerius violins. Could anybody give me any estimate how much this is worth? It is not in a great condition but still playable. Is this non-labelled but old and in good condition bow worth any value? See pics below. First of all I would just like to clarify that I am by no means paid to advertise this, just thought I'd post to help others who might need this. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnzoVheCZIjcqgbI1DvY_og On this Youtube channel you will find the piano accompaniment for many famous Classical, Romantic, Baroque, Modern violin pieces. The sheet music is on the screen for the convenience of the player, although the piano track can be used with any instrument if you find the same version transcribed for a different instrument. I thought I'd post it here for other musicians who might not have heard of or seen this channel. I read some comments which criticized the player of the piano, saying accompaniment should be played with more feeling, rather than robotic and perfectly in time, but that would not be possible to do when not with the soloist. In this case, how would one be required to follow a backtrack with constant use of rubato, etc. Anyway, I found this channel to be very useful/helpful in practising some pieces. Maybe it can help someone else also. Would love to hear of more websites which has the piano accompaniment for pieces like these.
  5. Fellow luthiers, I have just finished repairing an old German strad copy, likely from the early 1900's. I got it for free from a junk box at the shop where I work, and it needed a lot of repairs to make it playable again. I have, (generally) in this order: -Removed the broken neck -glued and cleated a small crack on the edge of the saddle -glued the C-bouts back on to the sides -glued the top and bottom back on to the sides -installed another old neck (in good condition) -reglued the fingerboard -made and installed a new heel -fitted new pegs -fitted a new bridge -and fitted a new soundpost. When I played it for the first time, what struck me was that the upper strings sounded pretty good, but the G and D strings were muted and buzzing, sounding like those of a 1/2 size violin. I tried everything to fix the problem, including: -Changing out the strings, tailpiece, and end button (not all at once) -removing the chinrest and fine tuners -adjusting the soundpost -adjusting the bridge and nut grooves -checking the pegs for loose decorations -checked for loose purfling -checking the neck relief, string height, and nut height -and pressing the bass bar with a soundpost setter Yet the buzz and flat tone still persist. I kept the violin strung and correctly tuned for the past two days, and it still has a buzz, but the tone is nicer when plucked. My violin seems to have a thinner top and shorter sides than others, which might account for the flat tone, but the culprit of the buzz is still at large.   7. I've been lurking for a while and have learned a bit. I'm looking to identify what a violin most likely is, I get that it's most likely not an original 'Jacques Bocquay'. It's most likely not from 1798 either. The label reads Jacques Boquet Luthier rue d'Argenteuil a Paris 1798 with the 98 written in ink. I don't have a picture yet but it's extremely similar to this: Would this be a german or french trade violin at the turn of the 20th Century? MIrecourt? Jacques Bocquay School? Who would have made this? Would this be earlier, mid or late 1800's?
  8. Hi all, I want to get my kids excited about playing the violin, it's summer and practicing the classics seems like a chore and boring to them. I am looking for suggestions where I can find some video game (mario, halo, starwars etc.) or rock (led zepplin, pink floid, doors, ozzy, metallica, dio, foo fighters etc.) sheet music for free. Hello - I am researching three violinists - Amely Heller - ca. 1905 Helen Jourdan-Morhange - b. 1888 d. 1961 Anne Briggs - ca. 1895 (her sister, Esther Briggs played piano) I have exhausted my resources to find any dates of performance or bibliographic material - Jourdan-Morhange was a friend & colleague of Ravel. Does anyone know about digital files of back issues of The Strad magazine, other periodicals such as Violins and Violinists and The Violin Times. Cheers - Andrew
  11. This is the first time I encounter a noticeable wolf note after stringing up my violin in the white. The wolf is the C on the A string in first position 2nd finger (and of course C on D string in 3rd position 4th finger and the same C on the G string in whatever position with whatever finger). I'm wondering if I should do anything about it before varnishing (I suppose after varnishing the wolf will be moved somewhere else). Any suggestion or insight welcome.
  12. Hello to everybody I have an old violin and i would like to have some opinions about the maker. For the moment i want to have an insurance but i don't know the value of the violin because it has no label inside. I have already contacted with some violinmakers and i have send some photos of my instrument and i am a little confused. One of them told me that it's Michelangelo Bergonzi, the second one told Giuseppe Dal Aglio and the third one Andrea Castagneri. Could somebody help me find out?

  15. Hello, im completely new to this site, and I dont know if im doing this right. Anyways.. Let me introduce myself, i'm Niam, a violin dealer in UK and I have acquired a lovely looking violin. I would like to hear your opinions about anything about the violin (value? origin, age, etc). I'd love to hear different insights. The violin is in perfect condition and has fluted f-holes, a nice blonde varnish and well done purfling. Im hoping the pictures will upload and that i did it right O.o Thanks!
  16. This is my first varnishing attempt on a violin. This has a couple of water based stains followed by a spirit varnish, followed by 2 layers of oleo-resinous varnish interspersed with more water stains. I still need add a layer of tung oil to the neck and then rub everything out.

  18. I bought a Paul K. Berger violin several years ago. I played it for a while but have set it aside and am thinking of selling it. Has anyone else ever heard of or had experience with his violins? I paid about $4000 for it and am trying to assign a current value for it.
  19. Hello, I am trying to find much more information about bowmaking. As i don't use power tools and my method is closer to the French, i would like to know if there is any book available. Regh's bow making book, as also Henderson's (i don't have my own copies but as i know) are based to different making methods, not by hand tools. I read about the Bolander's book, that is based on the French method but i cannot find it anywhere. Is there any else good book for bow making?
  20. Some questions for teachers, students, employers, employees, masters, apprentices, etc. . . How do you keep track of progress? And how do you motivate it? I take notes in lessons, tracking repertoire, etudes, technical and musical issues. But I use the notes mainly as a reference aid. I try to tell students what they are doing right and doing wrong, what they have learned recently and long term, and what they should be thinking about "this week." I explain the value of slow practice and the metronome and etudes and scales and theory, but my students and I just write on their sheet music, they don't take notes. I have come to the conclusion that I need stricter measures to ensure adherence to a rigid practice schedule. I know a number of my colleagues make their students keep practice diaries. This is a more hard-nosed approach than is in my nature, but on the other hand, what's not to like about it? How do they work? Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with what [string music] students should include in their notes? Probably the same type of stuff I keep in my teaching notes. Hmm... PS: How do you do etude/scale/excerpt study? 1 per week? Should we memorize etudes? I've tried explaining the Zen of Scales to my students, but they just get glassy-eyed.
  21. Hello everybody and my best wishes to every member here. I recently started making a bow from Padauk wood. It is a very nice while working on it, nice response to bending, not heavy like IPE massaraduba etc but not soft also. The result is above my expectations. Has anyone tried such a wood for a violin bow?

  23. Cloë Hanslip, the girl you might remember from the Maxim Vengerov Mastersclass video. Still playing as beautiful as ever, on apparently a 1737 Guarneri del Gesu violin, according to Wikipedia. Is it just me or does the violin look like a much bigger model? Does anyone perhaps have photos or details about the violin? Thank you.
  24. Hello everyone! I have a little question… Last year I came across a violin case at a local antique shop. It's sign painted 'The Hot Club Of France' with the name 'S. Grappelly'. It looked interesting, I vaguely knew the name and had been looking for cheap violin case, so I bought it. ​So, I did a little more research about obviously read up on the Hot Club of France and Stephane Grappelli. All this got me thinking about the possibility that the case used to belong to him. The case does look of the right age, and after doing some reading I know that Stephane Grappelli used to spell his name with a Y, not an I. I know it's a long shot, but I thought it would be worth getting it looked at. So, can anyone offer any advice as to how I can get this looked at? Or could anyone offer any more information?   25. Gentlemen, Please help me somehow. I have an old antique violin, possibly 250-300 years old. Possibly Tononi's (not sure) slim chances that it is Stradivarius (not the same stamp). Back stamp is a flower-like and it is on two places. Both are in axes with the violin's neck. First one is next to it (top of the upper bout) and second down at the bottom of the (lower bout). I would like to know where I can find more information about best estimators for these instruments (location, telephone, website if they have)? There are lots of frauds out there and I really don't want to waste my time with them. Thank you for helping me. Alexionov
