I have, within my very limited budget, been doing a little experimenting - I few months ago I bought an inexpensive violin off eBay to see what that was all about. Then I bought some inexpensive bows of different woods to see what that was all about. Then I bought a fractional sized violin - but I need to take it to someone who teaches kids to get a better idea of how decent it is...but I might try new strings on it first. And yesterday, on eBay, I "won" an inexpensive copy of the 15.75" 1785 Guadagnini viola that's so often reproduced. I was first mostly interested in a Da Salo copy, but after reading Roger Hargrave's article about the Guad, become very interested in it as well. I am well aware it's an inexpensive copy...however, I get to look at it (dimensions should be correct) and see how it physically feels to play it compared to my 16" Samuel Shen Strad copy (which I'm quite happy with - not looking to replace it - only to see what else is out there). I've always thought the bigger the better with violas...and 16" is as big as I can comfortably play...so now I'll see if the .25" makes any difference to handling. And as another MN'er (gowan) pointed out...the tenor vs. contralto voice might be different...don't know if I'll experience that, but we'll see. In the meantime...I get to wait for delivery. In an ideal world, I'd have "free" access to all these things...or a huge budget - but it's not an ideal world, so I'll just have to stick with Plan C...
