  1. Hi everyone, I want to ask on everyone’s opinions on this cello bow I’ve encountered — it does have a label ‘C. THOMASSIN Å PARIS’ — but I do not see a round ferrule. I am not an expert, so I do not know every details about a Thomassin, so I’m asking everyone what they think about the wood quality, varnish, MOP, etc., and possible origins of this bow. Thank you all!
  2. My dad bought me this violin when I was 12 (now 40) - I always chose my violins blindfolded when in the shop, so I wasn’t influenced by anything other than the sound….i had no idea it looked like this when I chose it. I hate to think what my dad paid for it as I later found out he was told it was a JB Vuillaume. (He was a farmer and no idea of musical world and went with what he was told). When I got a bit older/wiser I checked the documentation the violin came with and learnt it contained lots of info about the real violins made by Vuillaume and hinted at it being similar but no real certificate/evidence etc that would justify the large sum - I now know - he paid. I didn’t have the heart to let him know it was likely worth very little and as I adored the violin and it saw me through music college and beyond I’ve never felt the need to do anything but play it. However last few years I’ve “retired” from playing and am selling all my instruments/bows. I could do with some help understanding what the heck I’ve got and what I should expect to sell it for. there’s no labels or markings inside. thank you in advance.
  3. Greetings. I was hoping to get some information on a violin i just bought. It is a German violin labelled Theodor Kreutzer. First of all i would like to know if anyone here knows this maker and secondly what kind of quality instruments he/they produced. The violin seems to be in pretty good condition besides from some minor scratches. To me it looks like it is well made, but i am no expert, so it would be nice to have your opinion on this violin. Finally if it is at all possible it would be nice to know what price range this violin might be in (im not selling it but it would be nice to know if i have to pay extra attention). I will look forward to see if anyone has some inputs. Pictures in the attached pdf. Best regards Jakob Theodor Kreutzer 1956.pdf
  4. Hi, My husband bought me a 1st violin on eBay, but I've read here that usually it doesn't turn out well. We can return it in worst case. It was listed as an "antique Wilhelm Durrschmidt violin from Markneukirchen germany. On the inside of the violin the only label is stamped directly on the wood and reads "Wilh. Durrlshmidt Geigenbauer Markneukirchen i/S." admittedly that "l" may be an "s" on the durrschmidt stamp, no paper label. I wrote down on a piece of paper how the stamped label is laid out inside. Back is one piece, top is 2 piece. I have attached as many pictures as I could think of, please let me know if more are needed. I has a hard time getting pictures of interior construction, but it has wood blocks inside at the lower corners, as well as bandings that go around top and bottom that look like quarter rounds. Pegs, chinrest, tail piece and fingerboard are all ebony. I couldn't get all the pictures to attach so I uploaded them to an imgur albulm. http://imgur.com/gallery/gx0APV9 My questions are when was this likely made? Is it what it says it is? What quality is it? and any ideas on value? I'm worried my husband overpaid and I din't want to spend the $ to have it set up if it's going to be lousy.
  5. Hi everyone! I've been interested for many years in the identification of old violins and have recently started buying and reselling them. I have a great interest in the history of violins and love browsing auction sites and violin shops comparing different makers, styles, etc. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for books talking about violin identification (by school and maker) as well as the current market value of the instruments. I have heard of the Red Book but was wondering what you thought would be the best books to learn identification and valuation from. Thanks for your help!
