  1. Hello, I have some questions about using templates. I got the 5-piece Herdim template set as a starting point. This may have been my first mistake, but it's what I have for now. I started working with the inner template and realized way too late that I don't know if the template represents the inner edge or outer edge of the ribs. That is to say, if I make my mold with the exact outline of the template, will my ribs be correct, or will they be ~2-3mm too big. If the latter, how bad is that? Any advice on using these templates is greatly appreciated, since they don't really come with any information that I can find. I have the Johnson/Courtnall book as my primary reference, and it of course discusses making templates from posters, but that feels out of scope for me, as it leaves too much open for me to interpret/ruin. If anybody has alternatives to recommend, I am very interested in that also. I have looked for information on the Herdim templates both here and elsewhere and didn't find anything, so I do apologize if this is a duplicate. Thanks!
  2. Making the Violin Mould and Blocks Messiah - DRAFT - Not Tested - V0001.crvI'm working to create a basic set of CNC-router-ready files. The current 2D files are in VCarve Pro and 3D files will be created in Fusion 360 or similar. They will be shared here as an aid to others. The attached file is for the Messiah "symmetric" modified Strad PG mould as provided by http://www.makingtheviolin.com/ and serves as a jump-start for those who are working to produce a CNC-routed form. To do: Add holes to "inside corners" (complete 9/27; not yet tested) Add CNC instructions Perform test run The next items to be posted will include: Template for Messiah Top Silicon thermal blanket Rib Presses and Instructions Roughing model for the Top Roughing model for the Bottom Roughing model for the Neck These are designed to be produced in a straightforward manner. These models will later be modified to include an example CAM configuration and "registration" methods for alignment of parts with a 3-axis CNC router.   3. I am hoping to make a copy of this instrument and so far I have the herdim templates, a poster from museo del violino, which has useful measurements, but I am lacking any details of the archings. The Hellier Strad poster is out of print. Can anyone help me in locating them?
  4. I am slowly trudging ahead to the day I can actually start carving my #1 violin. I have received a Strad Poster for the Messiah from a very generous member here, and will be making a "based on" not "copy of" the Messiah violin from it. The direction I have decided to go is to try and make it symmetrical, so I am "averaging" the measurements (where there are two values for sides, etc) from the poster and using that average for my drawing. Step one is to be the scroll and neck. Being me, I want to understand what I am doing, and so in digging around, I found Addie's drawings (THANK YOU!) and was going to use the Bett's Scroll drawing he provided (I assume Addie is a he?) I decided to check it against the photo on the poster. That led me to trying to figure out what the measurements on the poster mean - ie. the measurement is from what point to what point on the scroll, what landmarks can I count on while carving. Since I am averaging, I expect the drawing to be off a little - a few millimeters - but close. The following screen shots show my dilemma at this point, I could use some insight into what I am doing wrong (if anything). I KNOW I am over thinking it, but this violin is a teaching aide and my way of learning violin making from wood working to designing all of it. So, I really want to understand what I am doing as opposed to just charging forward making something that looks sort of right. The photo is of the poster and I uniformly scaled and rotated it to fit the guideline grid and adjusted the rotation using the neck line below the fingerboard. Any help in understanding why the grid and curves don't line up what the photo would be appreciated: How I setup the guidelines to check/draw the scroll. Here is what Addie's Bett's scroll looks like on that grid with a photo from the Messiah Poster. And here is what the Silverpoint Drawing from the Bett's file looks like on that grid.   5. I am about to start my first violin. Having read a few books and lurked (and asked various questions here) I think the first thing I will be doing is making the template and mold. I will be making an inside mold using the templates/drawing provided by Addie (THANKS ADDIE for all that work! I really appreciate it). I will do some googling and reading specific to making a mold for the next couple days, and then start with a practice mold or two... My question today: Is there an advantage to making a "thick" (3mm to 6mm) template out of plastic or acrylic or plywood that can be saved and reused as opposed to printing the template and using spray adhesive to stick it on to the wood I will be making the mold out of. The print it and stick it approach seems to be less work, but I thought I would ask, and see if there are any advantages or preferences either way. Thanks in advance Frank
  6. Over the last couple of years I have extensively studied Stradivari's guitars, guitar forms and templates and guitar making methods, to come to a more close reconstruction. The large guitar was made after Cremona template MS. 750. The small guitar was made after the little form in Paris (E.901.6). The cases were based on the "Giustiniani" example. These were the first guitars ever made after the Stradivari forms and templates, instead simply making a shortened version of the "Hill" or copy a guitar with later alterations (Rawlings). An article about this investigation, along with a plan for the little guitar, was published in the summer edition of American Lutherie.
