I have a request to make a cello that would be better for travel for a gigging musician (rock/jazz music, but sometimes classical). He noted the David Gage Czech-Ease bass (http://www.czech-ease.com/). Any ideas on how this unusual size/shape affects sound? What about other compensations- graduations or bass bar? I found a few allusions to an improved bass bar on these over the years, but I'm not sure how it looked then or looks now. (https://www.talkbass.com/threads/new-improved-czech-ease-model.373533/#post-4817868, https://www.talkbass.com/threads/czech-ease-basses.390085/#post-5062693) I'm also trying looking at some ergonomic, oddly-shaped instruments to get an idea, but I've only come across pictures that are not helpful for building. Another thought I had was a normal-shaped, fractional size body with a 4/4 scale length. Anyone have good resources, or experience with unusually shaped/sized instruments?

I am doing some work on my antique cello and the top is one piece including the bass bar. There isn't any marker mark on the instrument except an M in pencil on the inside, probably just the craftsmans mark. Would this feature of the bass bar being part of the top give a clue to what age and what country, maker? Also the top is pretty thick, 3/16th" to 1/4" in some places. Should I shave it down? The top side is pretty beaten, should I resurface it or only take it down from the inside? Thanks for any help. Jim

Hi, sorry for making another bridge curve/shape topic, since there are already some out there, but instead of resurrecting an old topic, it might be better to make a new one. So first let me start by saying I tried quite a few different bridge templates. Ive tried making my own template, using a 42mm radius, aswell as checking that to the 42mm radius playing surface. I downloaded a bridge template, but all seem to have the same problem. As I go up higher in positions when playing, it gets harder and harder to play one string only. I cannot use the pressure that I would like, as it would cause 2 strings to be played, or even 3 strings. I like to play strong, with enough pressure. Does anyone perhaps have any suggestions about what I can do? I want to make a new bridge template, different from the one Ive been using, so any advice on this will be appreciated. Also, what is the usual preference of classical players, regarding bridge shapes/curves/radius? Thank you.

Hi there, Is there perhaps a general rule regarding different viola shapes and sizes, and how that impacts the sound? There are 3 violas that I'm currently looking at, all different shape, and size. I'll attach the pictures. I'm specifically interested in the Double Bass shaped viola. Does anyone know how this shape changes the sound from the normal shaped violas? Thank you. In order, these are 16.25, 16.5 and 16.5inches

Hello all ! At first let me introduce myslef a little bit.My name is Dominik and I am 17 years old.I am from Czech Republic.I am completely new to this forum as well as in the violin making.I have just finished my first violin which is horribly looking but was a good experience to get used with tools etc... I am about to build a new one, very unusually shaped. So my question is-does anybody have any experiences with making violin as shown in the pictures ? Are the dimensions same as for standard violin (height,widht,...) ? How can I find out the f-holes position ? Thank you for your help !
