Maestronet is a great example of how much information is available about violin making...and how hungry people are to learn more about the trade. There are great violin making schools. Few makers have the opportunity to attend. There are many good workshops: Oberlin Makers, Restoration, Acoustics, Bass,and Bow making, our Violin Varnish Workshop, Rodney Mohr's bow making and restoration, Joe Thrift's makers workshop. There is the UNH summer program with Lynn Hannings, Hans Neble, and Todd Goldenberg. These programs are a great way to learn new skills and hone old ones. Two problems here. One is that you must be available at the time the workshop is held. Two, good workshops tend to develop a core group of makers who attend annually making available space more precious. This leaves very limited opportunities for the greatest number of interested makers. Rodney Mohr [bow maker and teacher in Ohio] and his family: Anne his wife and Kate his daughter [also a bow maker] have established a new alternative. They have created a space for workshops to be held most of the year on a host of topics. They named the project: Learning Trade Secrets. Just this week there was a retouch workshop taught by world class restorer Stacy Stiles. Hi All, I'm new here and excited to talk to fiddle folks! ( instead of the wall!) I am an artist and live in the Mountains, ( Alppalachia USA. ) I am a self taught picker & have a handfu of violas, Gambas, tenor vielle, and cello. I can play them all at medium 'Jam'..or easy classical level. I read and play by ear. Every so often I have to take one of my 'babies' to a repair luthier. Sadly I have had results which range from doubtful to scary. I DONT WANT TO DO that anymore! I am a skilled silversmith, fune needle worker, desighner, and award winning copper plate etching artist, as well as wood cuts and have tooled soom saddles. I can andle MOST exacting crafts. I am READY to take on basic set up and light repairs for fiddles. I am searching for sources...both INFO, and GOOD quality materials, and tools. I am on Soc Sec. So...am NOT wealthy...but KNOW the value of good tools! PLEASE... send me any advice or leads you can. I have 4 instruments that need attention...and ...am playing the only one that is ' working'.
