  1. Hello, I am Nestor, from Greece I study physics in the university of Athens and I am really close to receiving my degree. Violin making (and musical instrument making in general) has been a passion of mine and I would like to become a professional luthier in the future. I was condisering to go and study at Scuola internazionale di Liuteria “Antonio Stradivari” in Cremona after I finish my studies in Greece One of my concerns is that I don't speak Italian. So I have a few questions if anyone is kind enough to answer them. Are the lessons strictly in italian or are there any in english for foreign students? Also I was informed by a luthier who studied there that there is no tuition cost and that I only have to pay for a place to live. That the actual school is free. Is this true and does this apply only for Italians or for foreign students as well? Thanks in advance ~Nestor
  2. I have recently decided that the process of violin making and repairing is something I may want to do as a career for the working part of my life (and as a hobby for the rest of it). However, I am only a Junior in High School so that is subject to change. But I was wondering if anyone had recommended schools for violin making and repairing that I would want to attend after graduating High School. I find myself reading many threads on this website and losing track of time very easily, especially when I work on little things on my own violin. I want to learn so much more about this art and I am thinking about applying to work at my local violin shop to learn the basics over the next two summers to prepare myself. Any input is greatly appreciated and any other suggestions will be taken into consideration. Thank you all very much as I am so glad I found this site just a little less than a year ago.

    Short camps?

Quick question --- As many of you know from other threads, I'm interested in learning basic luthier skills. It'd be as a hobby, so attending school full time is not a possibility for my situation right now. I learn best by seeing in person, asking questions, and doing with someone available if I need help. So I am wondering... are there any short camps or intensives that would teach basic skills to get me started? Something say two weeks or less time? I've done some preliminary looking online without much luck as I don't know where to begin. I added myself to an interest list for a potential VMSA camp this summer but that's the only solid lead I found. I could always shadow someone for a bit, but there is no one within three hours of my home and I'd ideally like a crash course crammed into short time to be my first step. Any leads appreciated.
