I have very sad news to report. Guido Lamell, a long time 2nd violinist for the LA Phil, and conductor of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra, died yesterday. He was an enthusiastic, accomplished teacher, musician, mentor, and conductor. I imagine there will be a much more focused, well-written obituary, but the below notice is all I could find. https://newdeaths.com/2021/07/15/guido-lamell-death-obituary-guido-lamell-cause-of-death/ This a huge and unexpected loss.

Roman Kim will be appearing with the Santa Monica Symphony in a free concert at Santa Monica High School, Barnum Hall, Oct 20, at 730 PM http://www.smsymphony.org/events/74th-season-premiere-concert. Some have compared him to Paginini. Don't miss this. Here are two of his performances:

Santa Monica Symphony with Annelle and Don's violin. Fantastic Martin Luther King Memorial Concert - Epitaph by Adolphus Hailstork, Barber Concerto, and Appalachian Spring. Guido told of a furious effort to locate this lost piece of music. Even the composer did not have a copy, as he had lent it out and it disappeared. The publisher was also out of it, and there were no records. Through persistence and luck, he located 3 copies a scant few days before they were to perform it. The real story is of Annelle Gregory playing the Barber on Noon's violin. I should have realized something was afoot when I saw Doc, Don, and Glenn (Dicterow) enter together and look for their saved seats. :-D Annelle really did a great job, particularly on the difficult 3rd movement, the violin really sang through the orchestra, and projected very well. Good bow movement, no excessive posturing, and very focused. I was pretty impressed. She's Glenn's student. She seems to like his violin quite a bit, so here's hoping it's a long term loan. Did anyone else see this concert?
