  1. I am receiving a couple of bows in a trial today and one of them is said to have a crack in the middle of the stick that has been repaired. My question is, with a good quality repair of this kind, would the crack automatically deem the bow as "trash" or how would it affect the value of the bow itself? I have no doubt that this bow would sell for a decent amount of if it weren't for the repaired break. If it is a quality repair, would this bow likely be able to be played successfully for an indefinite period of time or am I likely to have to deal with it breaking again in the near future (if I were to purchase it)? How would it affect the playing of the bow? Not being a luthier myself, I have no idea how a crack in the wood would even likely be repaired. Wood glue? Some sort of pin? More than happy to upload a picture once I have the bow in hand later today! Meanwhile, would appreciate input on any of the above.
  2. So I'm thinking more and more about purchasing a cello from a maker or seller online. And while recommendations for a reasonable place to do this are welcome, this post is mainly addressing my concerns for the delivery of said instrument. How are instruments shipped? (I'm in the midwestern US if that has any impact) What dealers ship reliably and pack them well? Do you guys trust online delivery and returns? Of course most sites claim to have integrity and to thoroughly pack and protect their instruments, but I'm curious if everyone's experiences are overall good or bad. Especially since Cellos are a lot riskier to ship than smaller stringed instruments. I've heard people say their setup was compromised, or that their instrument arrived safe and sound and even in tune. Thoughts?

    suzuki violin

Hi Someone told me before: Suzuki violin considered the last choice for a factory violin and not recommended at all. Question here :-\ 1- is this true? 2- if yes, does that mean it is terrible violin i shouldn't think of? Or no, not that bad.. it will work And thank you so much
  4. A local luthier is closing down, and has offered me an instrument with a very decent discount. It is a brand new cello built by the Hungarian master builder Péteri Károly in 2014. The instrument sounds really nice, but it has this "artifact" on the top: https://i.imgur.com/OgdMddD.jpg On the instrument, it is located here: https://i.imgur.com/Qj94RsY.jpg?1 Does anyone have an opinion on wether or not this is, or can become, a problem? Thank you in advance for your opinion in this matter!
  5. Does someone know, or would someone point me in the right direction: How many violins have been constructed? How many are extant? Do we have any numbers from the biggest violin factories (historical and modern)? How long do violins last? How many instruments can a 3 person workshop produce in a year? 7 person workshop? 20 person workshop? How many people have been employed in the largest operations? What is the history of mechanization in the industry? What are the different ways that quality and quantity interact? Or anything along any of those lines.
  6. Hi there I want to buy a few quality bridges to test the effect it has on the sound of a violin. Can someone perhaps suggest some high quality brands I can try? So far Ive worked mostly with Aubert Made in France bridges. Im interested to try a Josef Teller bridge aswell, like the one in this auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Josef-Teller-Adjustable-Violin-Bridge-4-4-High-Quality-/260827688008?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cba8aac48 Also http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Aubert-Violin-Bridge-4-4-Adjustable-Mirecourt-/190527454280?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5c523c48 Any opinions on these "Adjustable" bridges in general? Thank You.
