  1. At the end of lessons I always ask, "Do you have any other questions?" Almost all of my students always say, "No." But, I have one who usually has a good question either about repertoire, posture, technique, or practice. Today he asked me, "What should my mindset be while practicing?" Obviously, it's a very general question, and, as I told him, mindset shifts throughout a practice session, but what would your answers be to the question? I rambled for a while while trying to answer his question, but I think the heart of my answer was to "trust in the method, don't allow frustration to dictate how you practice."
  2. Hi, I'm considering trying out the Suzuki Method for violin. I have Book 1 already, I just need to figure out a good practice routine. I have a teacher who is familiar with Suzuki, but lets me play whatever I want. I have 20+ years of previous music experience, so my general music theory is pretty good I just want to know what people who have done Suzuki or teach Suzuki would recommend for a daily structured (possibly timed) practice routine. I usually practice between 1 and 2 hours every day.
  3. A long time ago, when I was first really learning about the suppleness of a good bow-hand, my teacher was trying to get me to feel the "paint-brush bristle" finger motions of a bow change. One exercise he taught me was that I should place a pencil on a desk any time I was bored/idle/not-being-watched-by-boss and, using only my fingers, to pick the pencil up horizontally as one would a bow-stick, over and over. In time, this proved to be very beneficial, as it taught me the sensation of using all joints in my fingers in a smooth way, and it helped to form the requisite nerve-connections. In that vein, are there any other exercises for anything, bow-hold, vibrato, left-hand frame etc. that you can do without a bow or violin, say, while sitting on your lunch break? I really enjoy these little things because it gives me a sense that I am not wasting time with life and associated niceties when I could be doing something beneficial to my violin-playing!
  4. Hi, I'm looking for lesson book recommendations for people picking up violin as a second (or third) instrument meaning something that focuses on the violin specifically and less on things like general music theory as I've had plenty of that in high school and college. My situation is that I've been a concert and jazz trombonist for many years and also play guitar and piano, but I've never touched a violin. So is there anything you guys or girls can think of that would suit my needs? Thanks for your suggestions
  5. Dear violinists and friends, I first started the violin (with a private teacher) halfway through the 6th grade, when I was about to turn 12. At the time I was not very serious, and did not practice very much. However, ever since listening to maxim Vengerov live a few months back, I have been practicing seriously (4 hrs a day). The materials I am currently working on is as follows: Carl Flesch (just started this week), Czardas by Monti (just finished this week), Mazas (working on No. 3 this week), 2,4,6 positions by Harvey Whistler (I know how to play the positions, can't sight read in them yet though), Melodious Double Stops Book 1 (almost finished, I am working on No. 25 this week), and Sevcik Op. 2 Volume 1 (the one with bowings for the chords, we skip around in this one). I really love the violin, in its entirety. Given my current level, do you think there is a possibility for me to minor in violin performance (as in would I pass the auditions). I am currently in the 10th grade. Thx
