Hello I haven't invested in a hide glue setup yet. But I have some violins to setup so I was wondering what most people use for glueing the nut on? I bought a setup DVD but it didnt say what he used. Although it looked like dab of Elmers. Thanks Mike

I recently purchased a new violin and there are many things about it that confuse me. One is why the nut was put on so that it hangs over the pegbox. Was this a common practice during a certain time period or was this a sign of poor luthier skills? I have never seen something like this, and would love to be educated on information about if anyone can help.

So this morning I planed a blank for the nut entirely without problems with beautiful perfectly smooth faces. I then decided to plane a blank also for the saddle (with the same plane but a different piece of ebony) and just could not do it at all. Whichever direction I planed there seemed to be a bit which was against the grain. Eventually I resorted to sanding the surfaces smooth. What is the reason for this and is there a solution?

Hello - I have recently had 2 strings in a row start to unravel, weaken, and eventually "crack" in half where they go over the nut. No, I do not have a sharp spot on the nut... I obsessively felt and looked for anything sharp. This also is a violin that I had some nut work done on a few years ago and I have never had this problem before. I changed strings, and it just randomly started happening out of the blue. After the first string broke, I lubricated the replacement string and nut with soft 0.9 lead pencil and the same thing is happening. It is a Pirastro Evah Pirazzi A. Still sounds fine, but with tuning and playing I worry it will need replacement in a few weeks like the last string, and I am afraid of it randomly breaking during a performance. Did I just get a bad batch of strings? Something randomly change with my nut? Or another issue I need to look into? Hoping this is something I can fix myself and be my first "violin repair" haha!

Hello folks, Just replaced a missing (!) nut on a local instrument lending library violin. Rather than order a blank, I cut my own from a decent chunk of macassar ebony I was given by a neighbor. Not perfectly black, but I found a nice dark section and went from there. It got me thinking about other types of materials - I've certainly seen bone and ivory, and I know guitar luthiers use things like micarta, occasionally mother of pearl, and the like. I generally prefer that the nut be the same or similar in color to the fingerboard, so I thought maybe water buffalo horn might be a possibility. I came to the the violin world through harpsichords, and we use a delightful little plastic called delrin/celcon (I see Don Noon has experimented with it a bit) for the plectra due in part to its durability and self-lubricating properties. It can be had in white or black and cuts pretty nicely so long as your tools are very sharp, but as I've only used in for tiny plectra i have no idea how it polishes up. Of course gluing it to the fingerboard with hide would be impossible, and so that more or less blows that idea, though you'd never have to lube the string grooves with graphite again! What are your thoughts? I'm sure many of you have experimented with all sorts of things and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on tone, workability, and the like. In a world where certain woods that we rely on are becoming more difficult to find or use legally, options are always good! Thanks, Jackson

If you watch this video, and look at the cellist playing, you will notice just how low the action is on the cello. The strings are very close to the fingerboard, and it looks so comfortable to play, compared to some of the cellos Ive tried playing before. The nut seems to be much lower, and the bridge is most likely also lower. Wont this under normal circumstances cause alot of "buzzing" against the fingerboard, due to the strings being that close to the fingerboard? Is this set up normal for cellos in your shop? Could string gauge cause/lower the buzzing of the strings? Thank you.

Is there a quick easy way to smooth a rough nut that I can try myself? I am game to try if I won't to any irrepairable (sp?) harm. It's just on the side of the e string...
