  1. I decided to try and build a violin, i want to know what you think so far, it is not polished yet, i already know what is wrong with it (some things are a little off dimensionally) but when you start from zero and read a book and freehand it you make mistakes because you just dont know what you dont know and i am super excited to get into making more!! i did not know such a big community is out here as i am just a concrete guy haha! neck is bristlecone pine everything else is standard stuff maple and spruce varnish is my own blend and color. pictures arent the best as it is surprisingly hard to take a picture of a really shiny thing, makes it look nasty! so what do you think?
  2. Good day everyone, i decided to pickup the cello about a month ago. i quit smoking and was looking for a reward/ distraction. Ive played electric bass off and on for 20 years. I purchased a super cheap cello on eBay and im in love. Tuning this new instrument has proven to be a pain. getting accustomed to the friction tuners is a struggle. I used my tuner that i have for my basses and guitars. Then i downloaded a tuner app and then another. All three are giving me different results. any advice on a specific tuner/ app that works best for cello. Im about to download a tone generator so i can just match the notes. any advice is greatly appreciated, john
  3. Dear Everyone, I'm new to the forum, I started to look into buying a violin and I got a really (to my eyes) beautiful offer. I started recently studying and practicing violin and I would like to upgrade from my Chinese violin. I could also continue practicing with the current one, but I was thinking a "new" violin could improve my experience. Because I am really new to this instrument I would like to ask some more expert people what do you think about it. I'll post some picture here. The violin has a repaired crack under the tailpiece. Of course I already know that the label is fake (it says Joannes Baptista Guadagnini fecit Parma ferviens C S R 1741), the price is around 1500 USD, so it is just impossible is a Guadagnini. I just wanted to see if I should look into something else at this point price or just stick with the current violin till the restriction are over and I can visit a store. Thanks really a lot in advance for your help Stay safe and practice! Fabio
  4. Making the Violin Mould and Blocks Messiah - DRAFT - Not Tested - V0001.crvI'm working to create a basic set of CNC-router-ready files. The current 2D files are in VCarve Pro and 3D files will be created in Fusion 360 or similar. They will be shared here as an aid to others. The attached file is for the Messiah "symmetric" modified Strad PG mould as provided by http://www.makingtheviolin.com/ and serves as a jump-start for those who are working to produce a CNC-routed form. To do: Add holes to "inside corners" (complete 9/27; not yet tested) Add CNC instructions Perform test run The next items to be posted will include: Template for Messiah Top Silicon thermal blanket Rib Presses and Instructions Roughing model for the Top Roughing model for the Bottom Roughing model for the Neck These are designed to be produced in a straightforward manner. These models will later be modified to include an example CAM configuration and "registration" methods for alignment of parts with a 3-axis CNC router. Please feel free to add comments, improvements, and photos of test-runs! Reference: Messiah, MTV Symmetric PG Form. Update (9/27/2020): Provided several modifications to the baseline file. 5. Hey, guys! Anyone have any information on a Dolfin 910 Cello? This is my first time here so I hope I didn't make any mistakes with this forum. Don't hate me o-o I'm new to Cello (though I have played the violin for years) and are looking to get one before everything gets worse with all these recent lockdown and more shops are closed as being "non-essential" (except puzzles are for some reason and I'm actually getting this for learning and career reasons, so...). I want something that I will keep for years without a need to replace it, something that would be decent enough for an intermediate player as well as a student, I just don't have that amount of money to throw around to just replace it after a few years lol. So I've been looking at second hand one's and found one, I'd like to know your opinions on it. It's labelled as a Dolfin 910 model and I believe it's made in Korea. It's price online is $699AUD but they've told me they're willing to lower the price to $550AUD. It comes with a hard case and bow. I'm pretty sure it's a newer cello, but I can't find much about it, I am allowed to view it in store, however. The sale is only for Easter though. Is it worth a shot? Or should I wait a little while before making a decision? I know $550AUD isn't much for a Cello, but hey, I'm a lonely pauper, alright? That's a lot of money for an unemployed 19yrd student and that's all my savings of ten years gone until I can find a job to compensate (I'm trying, it's just that I've left school at the most inconvenient time in history). I'm not flinging it on something just because it's cheap without some thought. Anyway, here's the adverts so you can get a look at it: Official website: https://www.cashconverters.com.au/shop/music-tv-video/musical-instruments/guitars-string-instruments/cello/001300268259 Gumtree advertisement: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/collingwood/other-musical-instruments/cello-dolfin-910-was-749-/1237985675 s-l400.webp
  6. I’m a beginning violinist. I realized I wasn’t holding my bow correctly, so I corrected it to the best of my knowledge - made sure my thumb was on the bump of the frog, my first finger was wrapped around the grip, my middle and ring finger were properly bent around the frog, and my pinky was curled on top of the bow. But when I began to play my violin, my wrist hurt badly, especially when I extended my bow. Suggestions or corrections?
