I am building a new 4/4 Cello. The top will be of reclaimed wide grain lumber: old-growth Ontario Red Pine(Pinus resinosa) milled in 1880 A.D.; the grain varies from 9 (nine) to 19 (nineteen) rings per inch. There are two nail holes 5 mm diameter. Question: Should the nail holes be patched with wood from the cut-offs OR left alone OR filled with twig end grain to simulate a knot? The cello is for myself and I really like the “honest” look of less-than-perfect materials and workmanship (so did the late Mike Molnar). Thanks in advance for your advice. Yours truly, Randy O’Malley

Hi guys/gals, I've just been lucky enough to have sold violin #2 which was inspired by the Del Gesu Alard. This means I have a little money to invest in a few more tools and the materials to start on #3. I have just ordered a bunch of timber from old world tonewood, a Liogier rasp (as I didn't have a decent rasp at all!) and the strad Plowden poster. Anyone care to share their experience of either building a plowden inspired violin or even seeing it in the flesh/grain?
