  1. I have a question on how to deal with a viola with too much varnish on the neck. The neck is too sticky for proper shifting. With my violins, the neck feels as though I am touching wood, but on the viola the varnish is shiny and feels like touching plastic. I'm not sure if the viola has spirit varnish or oil - I suspect it is spirit varnish. It is not an expensive instrument - Chinese made in 2001 at about 1000 EUR at the time. Can I simply wipe the excess varnish off using alcohol? Any advice?
  2. Not long ago, soon after acquiring my current student violin, I found that the neck was not properly centered so the bridge must be placed off-center, 2-3mm towards the bass side. I've been thinking ways to solve this bad alignment of the neck and thought perhaps to unglue the top just under the neck block, pull on the scroll sidewise a bit and then re-glue. Could this work?
  3. Hello! I am looking for some expert advice on a repair venture I am beginning on a friend's cello. I am an experienced electric guitar builder but cello is a bit outside of my pond. I have a neck that is cleanly broken off from the pocket with only some minor chipping within. I have three questions: - Do I need proper hide glue or would some Titebond III do the trick? Any alternatives? - Would it be preferable to fill the chip-outs with a glue/sawdust mixture or do I need to look at replacing the block? - Should I remove all glue before a second glue-up? Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    neck back ribs

We all know that back, ribs, neck of a violin should be made of the same wood, then if i can clearly see grains or flames or figures "whatever :D" on both back and ribs but not on the neck!! What could that tell us? And DO NECK WOOD AFFECT SOOUND QUALITY??? and thank you so much for your answers
  5. Hello,I have a violin with the neck graft done by Hill's. I wonder how the Hill's finish the neck? It has passed 40 years and the neck is still intact with a glassy look. I have heard that the Hill bow maker finish their bow with boiled linseed oil. Is that the thing they used in finishing the neck? Any ideas? pearwood

Hi everyone, Use of pearwood pops up every now and then in forums, both in older instruments and the ones currently in making, but how common has the use of pearwood been over centuries? Is it characterising any particular region, time periood or school? Was it just the pear neck, or entire instrument body (perhaps except the deck) ?
  7. Found groove cut into neck, and matching groove on underside of fingerboard. (Suzuki viola 14"). Nothing in the grooves. Why the grooves? (photo attached).
  8. I have a Mittenwald violin that Im working on, and upon removing the back plate for repairs, I noticed a difference in the way the neck is attached to the neck block. Is this common on Mittenwald violins, or could it have been the work of a repairman who reset the neck at some point? Here is a photo. Thank you.
  9. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281179772552?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 This is the fifth instrument I've seen on ebay with the very long neck, although the others have had 14" bodies and a single peg. I am interested in the history and purpose of these instruments. Thanks.
