This one violin has got me asking so many questions... I think this should be the last one. I have read a few topics on medullary rays in here but I have not seen curved/warped rays until I saw the back of my violin. Is it caused by the way the violin was carved, exposing some rays in places and not exposing them in other places? Is there any significance to their shape? And is this a sign of nice quality wood? Thank you all again for your help on all of the topics I have started.

Roughing out a 1-pc back uncovered this thing, no clue on the surface before starting. What to do... -Pitch this back and start over (aarrrghh) -Patch it... this would be a really challenging thing to do well, with the idea that I could possibly whittle out the defect, saw out a nearby hunk from the inside and try to match the grain and flame and shape of the long, skinny, squiggly cutout. There's no assurance that this could be done without some mismatched flame or something that would stand out, and once starting down this path, there's no turning back. -Potter... just leave it, finish it, and call it a Harry Potter scar, which might not be quite so bad under varnish. There's no structural or tonal concern, as it's not a crack, and it's nowhere near the soundpost. There's just a small ratty zone near the middle that I've already dug out and filled. I am currently leaning toward the last option, as this it too nice of a back to throw out (not to mention the effort invested up to this point), and the patch idea is a bit frightening.

Hello makers, The time has come for me to thin my herd a little. I have for sale some very fine red maple cut between 1993 and 2003. The photo shows a pretty good representation of what I have. There is more. In some cases I have more pieces from the same tree. Most of the maple is top grade stuff. I do have a few more economical pieces if anyone is interested. In most cases I have matching ribs and scroll blocks as well. I have some engelman spruce available also. I got some nice big viola size spruce (500mm) , It is in very nice wedges and the grain seems to be just about perfectly quartered. It is stamped 2013 so it is a bit new to use on anything but I was going to put it away in my hope chest/wood scholarship closet for a few years. Should it be sawn in two so it will season faster or should I just leave it alone. It is european wood if that matters. How new is too new? The spruce is really something, you can run your hands over the edges and the stuff just sings when you hold your ear to it. It smells so lovely and clean. OK, I'm a nut case :-) I I was thinking that I would need to find someone with a large bandsaw with a re-sawing blade or can it be done by hand (not by me!) DLB

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this wood actually is? I have been told that it's maple, Flame maple, and Tiger maple - so I'm guessing it is at least "maple".. Are flame maple and tiger maple the same thing, in which case all three are correct? Or is there a difference? If there's a difference, which one does this look like and why? When I google flame maple and tiger maple, they both look the same to me. I'm not sure what differences I'm looking for. Many thanks

Hello, This question is slightly painful to ask, but where could/would/should I purchase wood for varnishing test strips? Since I don't make instruments, I don't have random wood pieces laying around. Would I be fine testing on kiln-dried wood bought from a local lumber store? Should I purchase some actual tonewood and turn it into test strip pieces? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid I've gotten infected with the 'violin varnishing disease' ...and now I really need a place to test out some certain methods, recipes and ideas. Thanks.
