  1. Has anyone heard of the viola maker by the name of Daniel Mason? Last year I shipped in a very nice viola by him from Robertson and Sons in NM, but I wasn't able to buy it at the moment. When I called the shop they said that they receive the instrument sporadically on consignment, but they don't buy it from the dealer himself. Does anyone know of him or his instruments? When I google his name, the only somewhat-relevant results that pop up are pages about a professor of violin at the University of Kentucky, who I assume isn't the same person.
  2. I'm not connected in anyway with the seller, but I thought this might be interesting to those researching 19th century English makers. There is an 1895 violin by William Old currently for sale on Facebook market place in Sydney, I'm not posting this in the Auction Scroll as I don't want a discussion about price, this is really about the maker. It looks amateur to me - but what would I know. A quick Google didn't find him. I won't post a link here, but I have copied the photos in case someone wants them. This is from one showing the saddle, and some other slightly disturbing details. and the label: Regards, Tim
  3. Does anyone know anything about these two makers? I have a violin made by each of them on loan for a couple weeks and I can’t find anything about them other than the page on Terra Nova for the Bykowski. I’m especially interested about info on the Bento as it was made in 1905. According to the label in each violin the Bento was made in Italy and the Bykowski is Polish.
  4. Hello, Please see images below... this violin has gone in for repair - would really appreciate any comments on when and where it might have been made. Also possible value? Please may you also include what identifies it ( I am new here, curious and eager to learn!)
  5. I’m not familiar with bow makers or how to identify what kind it is. Can anyone make out what it is?
  6. Hi All advice on good string combinations
  7. Hi, I am in the process of building my first violin using an inner mold and would like to use allignment pins for finishing the edge work before beginning thicknessing. I've heard of a variety of different materials being used for allignment pins however I would like to use ebony. Are there any places where I could find ebony pins? If not, how would I go about making them? Any advice or good alternatives to ebony pins would be great! Thank you.
  8. Hello, I am a cellist in Australia trying to find the cello of my dreams (no easy task in this part of the world!). Can anyone help me out with information about this maker? I have just come across a cello dated from 1981 by this maker. It is very hard to get information about the overseas makers here in Australia, and what they should be worth…...
  9. Hello dear all, I would like to get some general information and/or references of the work of Mr Robert Curtz from Montana as I have not been able to find much on the web. Please feel free to contact me privately as appropriate. Thanks in advance.
  10. My Mom gave us her cello about 5 years ago that she has had most of her life and she is now almost 70. It has part of a marking on the inside that says "made in Germany", but that is the only identification I can find. We are going to have to sell it and I don't have any idea what maker it is from or what general price I should try to sell it at. She played it in many orchestras and other cellists thought it had a wonderful sound. Any help you could provide would be wonderful! Thank you. -Jonathan
  11. Hi, Yesterday I tried one violin by Eugene Corvisier. The sound is very bright, warm with power. What will be a reasonable price for this maker? Thanks.
  12. Hi, Recently I tried a Mochizuki Shinya violin,It sounded very good. But I don't know the maker. Is there any one who can talk more about this maker? What will be a reasonable price for a violin from this maker? Thanks.
  13. Hi all, Can anyone help identify possible makers for this bow? It appears to be stamped SED????ON There is a sticker on the frog which reads made in France. Thanks
  14. I've run across this item, donated by Harold Hayslett's family, and I suspect it is for wraping bows? If not, then what the heck is it? How is it used?
  15. I had this posted in Pegbox, and it was suggested it more appropriately belongs in the Contemporary Maker's Gallery. So here it is, #23, based on Strad 1716. sound sample https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox0CYYB_fSs Alex Shlifer violinist with Greenville Symphony. T https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox0CYYB_fSs click for sound sample. All Romanian wood, OldWood ground and varnish. No extra charge to leaving tool marks showing here and there. I'v e been asked about the purfling, its maple/pear/maple, slightly wider than the standard purfling with the fiber layers.
  16. I was looking closely at my mother's old violin today, and realized that something I'd always considered to be damage on the top actually looks like writing, perhaps by some method of engraving or stamp. It just looks too "regular" to be simply damage. I'm attaching a picture and wonder if anyone out there has seen similar. I cannot make out what it says. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154811576642662&set=a.447674227661.227685.626802661&type=3&theater
  17. So what do you think - Sartory or not Sartory? The negative image is to show the name stamp more clearly. You have to hit the right arrow on each pic to go to the next. Thanks. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154814637567662&set=pcb.10154814638322662&type=3&theater
  18. I recently acquired a lovely looking and sounding violin whose only identification is "E. W. #14" inside. Is there any place where I might be able to find out who EW is? Thanks! TimM
  19. Anybody got anything on Albert Wolfram? Markneukirchen, 1932 Violin. Got the violin from the Weisshaar family in Orange, California. It's absolutely beautiful sounding, but I can't seem to find anything on this maker. Thanks
  20. (Ooops! I meant to post in the Pegbox, not here. Sorry!) I also posted this at Violinist.com, so if you responded there, you don't need to here as well. I know this is a "copy" instrument, but does anyone have any idea as to what model or maker it most closely resembles? Small image: Large image
  21. Dear All, Recently my godfather passed away and left a fairly considerable number of assorted stringed instruments and bows to me in his will. Despite being a professional violinist I am woefully ignorant when it comes to identifying instruments and wondered whether anyone on here could help? These two violins seem to be the most recent in the collection and despite not having been played for about fifteen years are still incredibly responsive. Apologies for the quality of the photos, the lighting in the house is incredibly poor. Thanks in advance. http://imgur.com/a/jJwyj#0
  22. Who made this Viola, could be Italian? maybe Amati? http://subefotos.com/ver/?655225819f0f98cf13e3d950e8c08f7bo.jpg Thank you very much for the help
  23. Hello everyone. I have two violins by Butler, PA violin maker "Frank T. Cypher" and I am unable to locate any information on this maker. From a patent application I know that he was working in the 50's. That's all I got. Thanks!
