I have an old violin, probably 18th century, with the label, “CJ Belling’s Collection. No. 112” Is anyone familiar with this collection? There is also an illegible word inside of the right f hole lobe, on the back plate. I don’t know anything about where the instrument was made, but it appears to be a handcrafted instrument. I will post measurements and photos later.

Hello, I've been searching the Roth threads on this site and others and haven't found an answer to my question yet. I have a violin with a label that reads "Ernst Heinrich Roth Markneukirchen anno 1925 Copie Antonio Stradivarius" and has a stamp in the middle of the back that reads "Ernst Heinrich Roth Markneukirchen" in an oval pattern. The previous owner's deceased father bought it in the UK sometime in the 1920s (I assume no earlier than 1925). However, there is no serial number and there are no other markings. I am trying to find out whether this is an authentic Roth, and also what model it may be. Does anyone have information on this particular type of Roth label?

You obviously can't change history, but you can improve on historical practices, set better precidents, "cancel" poor protocols. If the majority of "old" violins were mislabelled, and the practice continues unabated, does that suggest the industry/market is complicit in this deception? We already have laws in effect that prohibit fraud and misrepresentation, so why are sellers not worried?

I have come across a label that has “antic” written with 2 stars. Does “antic” mean something regarding instruments?

Several weeks ago, I promised somebody that I would post a real Signature from Schödler in Passau. I can no longer remember who I promised, or in which thread, so I hope that the gentleman concerned will find it here

Hello all, I currently own a violin that is labeled as a Leon Bernardel violin but there are a lot of features on this instrument that are not consistent with anything of this maker. It may not even be French at all. I was wondering if anyone has some experience or expertise with identifying instruments, and what could have led to the fabrication of this false label. Quite honestly, I don't know the genuine age of this instrument. Here are some photos I have taken of the violin: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/brnb6cwf5vrnzcd/AAC6pShk38VlUsffQRVG7x_Na?dl=0 Some automatic giveaways that this is not a Leon Bernardel: -back of the scroll -the "bee-sting" on the purfling Let me know what you think. Help is much appreciated!!

Here is the issue, I would upload pictures of the violin... however I did so in a Facebook group and everyone wanted to turn the focus on the violin... My question is simple, has anyone seen a label like this? The little handwritten circles on the boarder ect... and if so can you show me one? This vioin has long been a issue for me, as the maker... this part of the label is missing, if it was a factory violin German or otherwise... more labels like it would be out there, but in all of my years I have yet to find one...

A violin is being sold from Prague, Czech Republic, with a Socquet Label. I've seen threads about this maker before, and have seen violins with the label similar to the one below. My concern, however, is that the exact year in on this label was not specified: see that there's a 17 there, consistent to the maker being from the 1700s, but the last 2 digits were left blank. Are there any red flags as to the authenticity and value of this violin's age and label? Personally I don't care if this is a high value violin or not, would just like to know if the label is genuine, and if it's actually from the 18th century and not a 'fake' modern antique-ized violin. Here are additional photos of this violin:

Hello, everyone! It was suggested to me to try this forum for an inquiry about my new cello. I just bought a lovely instrument of unknown origin. My best guess is late 19th/early 20th century German manufacture, but I'm just a player. The label on the inside is largely removed apart from this tiny piece, and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what it could be? Many thanks for your time!

Doubtless, genuine label -
As I see it, this eBay violin (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nice-VIOLIN-Bow-Hard-Case-Hand-Made-Fuente-Gran-Reserva-Hoyo-Monterrey-/201019244328?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ecdae3f28) bears the label(s) transferred from the box of cigars. Hence, is it now the cigar box violin? And what should one do with it: playing or smoking?
