So, thinking far ahead into the future, I thought I'd buy some tonewood for a first build. I bought a piece of spruce advertised online as large enough for a one piece top, as I would like to leave the step of joining plates for a later opus number. The piece I got I suspect is from a piece of wood that was thought for a cello top. I gueass something must have been wrong with it and it got cut into pieces for violin tops. It has a huge sap pocket on the back (the side that was not visible on the photo...) which wasn't mentioned in the description, but I guess that a top could be gauged from it anyway, although not much Wood will be left for a bass bar. Anyhow, what surprises me is that one half of the Wood is mouldy, the thicker half. One the back side, Grey and bright yellow spots are visible at the thicker half of the plate. The side Shows Grey streaks and on the top side there is a rather large (8 CM? diametre) greyish spot, so I would guess the mould goes right through. To what extend is this acceptable? Is this Wood usable? Have I been ripped off?
