Curious if anyone out there can tell me anything about this violin. The only thing I know about it is that it’s an imitation Strad based on the label, but it was a gift from an ex years and I can’t for the life of me remember where he acquired it from. It’s clearly in pretty rough shape (seems to have suffered water damage?) so I’m not expecting that it’s worth anything, but I’m mostly curious about an estimated age and origin. In the case with it was a really nice pernambuco bow with a real ivory end screw and frog with the number 4 (Roman numeral) scratched into it as the only marker, and a couple of these unique looking handmade pegs. I don’t have a photo of the bow because it’s at my luthier getting refurbished and rehaired. Any insight, opinions, or guesses you have would be appreciated. I don’t have the money to bring it in for an appraisal (nor do I think it would be worth it given it’s condition) but I’m curious about it! Thanks!

I have acquired this violin from my grandfather. I studied and worked as a luthier primarily on guitars, and the build quality to my eye seems rather high. Also the wood selection is good too. Very close grain spruce top very well quarter cut. The back is a single piece of quite highly flamed maple. However upon inspection I found a small letter A carved into the pegbox. There is no makers label in the inside of the instrument, however I've been made aware that with violins that not always the best means of identification. Can anyone shed some light on this instrument please. My grandfather said he thinks it was made around 1860.

Hello everyone, For some time I have been playing on a nice 1946 Anton Wilfer violin made during his stay in Mittenwald. Because I'm interested in the history of my instrument('s maker), I was wondering if some of you could help me out answering the following questions: Is there any information available on Wilfer's career other than in Brompton's Book of Violin & Bow Makers? It seems that Wilfer's later shop was renowned in the Montréal area. Is my violin (see link to pictures below) a typical example of his craftsmanship? Does his work fit in a specific school? Is this violin modelled after a specific maker (Guarnerius perhaps)? Many thanks! Do you have any information about this maker, perhaps Herman Frey, active in 1831? It seems that "Petropoli" is not related to the city of Petropolis, in Brazil, but to St. Petesburg.
