Hello Maestroneters...Happy New Year. I received a violin today which I bought at auction before Christmas. It is an E. H. Roth Amati copy 140R and it a surprisingly nice fiddle for a "bottom of the range" instrument. Interestingly, it came with a Hills set up, with good quality Hill fittings and it has a Hills number on the fingerboard. Given that this is a pretty lowly instrument did Hills number and inventory everything that went through their shop? Did they sell Roth instruments so might it have come from there when new?

Hello,I have a violin with the neck graft done by Hill's. I wonder how the Hill's finish the neck? It has passed 40 years and the neck is still intact with a glassy look. I have heard that the Hill bow maker finish their bow with boiled linseed oil. Is that the thing they used in finishing the neck? Any ideas?
