I fancy making a Guarneri model violin, but I was hoping the experienced makers, may be able to help suggest which model might be best to use, and also from which period. I have read that it is believed Guarneri used a single mould, to make all of his violins. The differences being only the edge overhang, corner shapes, and how well bent, or not, the ribs were. I’m not quite buying this, the variation seems far too great. Therefore, rather than making a generic Guarneri mould, I will want to use a single instrument, to create the patterns. I know some are much more famous than others, but for those who have access to the real instruments, which ones have you found to sound the best? Thank you in advance.

I've made a half-dozen bridges for Strads, but now I'm making a bridge for my first Guarneri, and I'm wondering whether I should do anything different for the Guarneri. Do people usually use the same blanks for both? Should I change any of the specs for say string height, foot thickness, bridge thickness, angle with the belly, etc.? I'm not looking for perfection or extreme optimization---just ordinary, accepted practice. Please advise.

Cloë Hanslip, the girl you might remember from the Maxim Vengerov Mastersclass video. Still playing as beautiful as ever, on apparently a 1737 Guarneri del Gesu violin, according to Wikipedia. Is it just me or does the violin look like a much bigger model? Does anyone perhaps have photos or details about the violin? Thank you.

I saw this violin at the last Bromptons sale yesterday and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on it? http://www.bromptons.co/auction/23rd-june-2014/lots/258-a-very-fine-and-interesting-italian-violin-after-peter-guarneri-of-mantua.html It has a really interesting outline. I like how the upper corners jut out almost horrizontaly. I don't recall seeing a violin with a similar outline. I also love the choice of wood. Is it what some people refer to as 'oppio'? I thought I would post this in the hope of hearing other people's opinions about it. Does it look particularly 'Mantuan', if so, are there certain characteristics which go with that school? Interesting that it is sold with paperwork stating its a Balestieri and it's listed as after Peter of Mantua. Any thoughts? A quick disclaimer - I didn't buy it so I'm not fishing for attribution hints - I'm just curious

Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone could confirm or deny the authenticity of this violin that used to be my dads elderly neighbors fathers violin. My father received this violin as a present from his elderly neighbor back in 1969 or so. That neighbors father apparently played it a long time ago. He had received the violin in the 1840s (?). I was looking for another cord for my guitar amp in the basement and stumbled upon it. Being an avid cello player for 8 years now (I'm in 9th grade) i immediately realized what i could have in my hands when i read the label inside of the violin. I can post pictures if need be. i was wondering if it could possibly be a genuine Guarneri violin. "Joseph Guarnerius fecit Cremonae anno 1735 IHS +" is what the label on the inside of the violin says. Please and thank you for any help.
