  1. Does anybody knows about Jakob Krampera ? He was a violin maker in Znaim (now known as Znojmo, Czech Republic) in the middle of the 19th century. I own a violin from him, a 1841, that needs some work (open seams, neck reset, new bridge). I’m gonna repair it and set it up right to really test it but I wanted to know a little bit about him and the quality of his work. Thank you !
  2. JoeG

    Violin ID

Here's an old battered and shattered violin whose maker could probably be identified without too much difficulty. The label appears to have been removed, if it was ever labeled at all. The images have been reduced to 50% original size. Will post some pics of the head asap. Thanks in advance for any help offered, JoeG [edit] Though not readily visible in the front view, there is a notch to the north end of the peg box.
  3. Is there something distinctly Czech about this Czech violin? I was just comparing what I think I'm starting to see on it, to the possibly German viola... Other than the scroll...I quite like it. But maybe I shouldn't be liking it? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-ANTIQUE-INSTRUMENTS-for-RESTORATION-1-VIOLIN-L-F-Prokop-1927-2-VIOLA-15-2-/351024851651?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51bab62ac3
  4. I am new to this whole thing looking to buy my first violin. I have read a lot on this topic and realize that getting a better violin now will probably be more beneficial at least as far as staying enthusiastic. I have found a violin, but unfortunately do not know enough about them (I do not want to trust the seller completely). Seller says it is labelled Johannes Pressenda of Turin, but most likely it is a tribute piece styled alike. He also says it is a 1850 Czech violin. Any feedback at all would be helpful and much appreciated. http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech14.jpg http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech1.jpg http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech2.jpg http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech8.jpg http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech9.jpg http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l582/pahdah_hound/Czech%201870%20Lury%201-19-2013/Czech13.jpg Posting the photos in Link form because they are very large and I know you guys hate that.
