A student of mine brought in a Chinese violin this week that she had bought online. She asked me to set it up and put new strings on it as the ones that came with it were rather desperate... The instrument was at least superficially attractive visually, but as I was putting up the bridge I got a good look at the top. The grain lines in the "spruce" were drawn or painted on and there were spots without painting where no grain was visible at all. I've never seen anything like it. The violin had a very thin sound, but loud, rather like an Erhu. Any ideas what this is?
