I recently got the nut changed but the G string is closer to the edge of the fingerboard compared to the E string. Does it look okay?

Hello there, Recently; I noticed that the fingerboard on my instrument has developed significant wear and tear; affecting both playability and tone. As I am quite attached to this violin; I am eager to explore options for restoring it to its former glory. What material would be best suited for a replacement fingerboard? I have heard ebony is traditional; but are there other materials worth considering for tonal or durability reasons? How crucial is it to find a skilled luthier for this task? I want to en;sure that the replacement fingerboard is expertly crafted and prop;erly fitted to my violin. What should I expect in terms of cost for a fingerboard replacement? Are there any factors that might influence the price significantly? How long does the process typically take from start to finish? I am hopi;ng to minimize the time my violin is out of commission. Are there any special consid;erations or maintenance routines I should be aware of after the replacement is completed? I want to ensure the longevity of both the fingerboard and the violin as a whole. Also, I have gone through this: https://maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/358410-violin-id-and-neck-repair-uipath-please-help-/ Additionally; if anyone has personal experiences or recommendations they would like to share regarding fingerboard replacements; I would greatly appreciate any insights you can offer. Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Dear Everyone, I'm new to the forum, I started to look into buying a violin and I got a really (to my eyes) beautiful offer. I started recently studying and practicing violin and I would like to upgrade from my Chinese violin. I could also continue practicing with the current one, but I was thinking a "new" violin could improve my experience. Because I am really new to this instrument I would like to ask some more expert people what do you think about it. I'll post some picture here. The violin has a repaired crack under the tailpiece. Of course I already know that the label is fake (it says Joannes Baptista Guadagnini fecit Parma ferviens C S R 1741), the price is around 1500 USD, so it is just impossible is a Guadagnini. I just wanted to see if I should look into something else at this point price or just stick with the current violin till the restriction are over and I can visit a store. Thanks really a lot in advance for your help Stay safe and practice! Fabio

Hello all! I was hoping to seek some advice from this community on an upcoming restoration attempt I will be beginning. As a long time violin player, I recently rescued a ca. 1920s-1930s German "factory violin" from the trash. I have always toyed with the idea of attempting to build a violin or guitar and this seems like an opportunity to get some "free" education and experience. I am aware that a violin such as this is essentially worthless and many professionals would say that it is not worth the time/money put into it, but I have the time and access to the tools to make me confident enough to attempt something like this and the learning experience alone would be worth it to me. My concerns regarding this instruments issues are the order of operations in which things might be approached. I've attached some images that display the many problems with this instrument, such as: -Split back plate -Warped ribs on the lower bouts and upper right bout area -Neck gap/detachment Would anyone have any advice on what to tackle first? I was thinking about removing the back plates first, planing and joining and trying to reattach the ribs correctly. After this I would remove the the front and reset that. Once the body is structurally back together, I would tackle the neck reset. Does this sound like a good approach? Am I in way to over my head? Any advice/comments/suggestions are appreciated! Thank you! Will Whaley - Rochester, NY

So, I'd like to thank you all in advance for potentially helping me sort through all of the general questions I have, and also welcoming me into this community(by allowing me to create a free account to quiz the people in the lifelong trade/journey about what I seem to have gotten myself into). Thanks again for reading. I am excited to become a part of this particular community!

Hello all I am sometimes tempted into buying violins for my own use, occasionally getting reasonable (for my standard of playing!) instruments at good prices, other times getting kindling. I have just acquired a violin with the label "L.E.J.T L'Incomparable Mirecourt 1894 VL . It seems to be in decent order, no obvious cracks or splits but it needs a new bridge and the soundpost resetting, maybe the pegs adjusting and, for my purposes, a fine tuner tailpiece. I can't do the work myself so before I commit to having someone professional sort it out for me, would you be kind enough to tell me if I would be throwing money away if I did? I know that its easy to spend £300 on repairs and end up with a £100 violin. If it helps, I can tell you that I paid £50 for it. Any other insights on the violin would be welcome. Regards BB

Hi All, I'm new here and excited to talk to fiddle folks! ( instead of the wall!) I am an artist and live in the Mountains, ( Alppalachia USA. ) I am a self taught picker & have a handfu of violas, Gambas, tenor vielle, and cello. I can play them all at medium 'Jam'..or easy classical level. I read and play by ear. Every so often I have to take one of my 'babies' to a repair luthier. Sadly I have had results which range from doubtful to scary. I DONT WANT TO DO that anymore! I am a skilled silversmith, fune needle worker, desighner, and award winning copper plate etching artist, as well as wood cuts and have tooled soom saddles. I can andle MOST exacting crafts. I am READY to take on basic set up and light repairs for fiddles. I am searching for sources...both INFO, and GOOD quality materials, and tools. I am on Soc Sec. So...am NOT wealthy...but KNOW the value of good tools! PLEASE... send me any advice or leads you can. I have 4 instruments that need attention...and ...am playing the only one that is ' working'. THANK YOU for your help and encouragement! Miss Billie, ( Blue Ridge Girl )
