Hello everyone! I have a little question… Last year I came across a violin case at a local antique shop. It's sign painted 'The Hot Club Of France' with the name 'S. Grappelly'. It looked interesting, I vaguely knew the name and had been looking for cheap violin case, so I bought it. So, I did a little more research about obviously read up on the Hot Club of France and Stephane Grappelli. All this got me thinking about the possibility that the case used to belong to him. The case does look of the right age, and after doing some reading I know that Stephane Grappelli used to spell his name with a Y, not an I. I know it's a long shot, but I thought it would be worth getting it looked at. So, can anyone offer any advice as to how I can get this looked at? Or could anyone offer any more information? No one has been able to help me so far. I saw this forum and thought I may be able to get an answer! Photo here - http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=4rdc3p&s=8#.VNOvhVrvbww

Gentlemen, Please help me somehow. I have an old antique violin, possibly 250-300 years old. Possibly Tononi's (not sure) slim chances that it is Stradivarius (not the same stamp). Back stamp is a flower-like and it is on two places. Both are in axes with the violin's neck. First one is next to it (top of the upper bout) and second down at the bottom of the (lower bout). I would like to know where I can find more information about best estimators for these instruments (location, telephone, website if they have)? There are lots of frauds out there and I really don't want to waste my time with them. Thank you for helping me. Alexionov

Hi! I'm planning on buying a violin, and I came across one with amazing sound. It's being sold for 73,000 RMB (Chinese yuan), and I wanted to ask if it's actually worth that much? On the inside, it says that G. S. Tartini and that it is modeled after a 1725 Stradivarius. Through some of my own research, I have found that Tartini violins like these are from a firm called the Schuster Brothers, but I have been unable to find much information specifically directed towards their Tartini violins. If anyone has any extra info, I'd very much appreciate it!

I recently bought a Mendini MV200 1/2 size violin for my student. I read a lot of good things about it and figured a cheap violin would be fine for her, especially if it was as good for the price as the reviews said. The bow was horrendous, but that's another matter. The biggest problem I'm having with it is that the G string won't stay in place and always finds its way sliding to the very edge of the bridge, almost falling off and looking extremely uneven. As best as I can tell, the bridge is alligned correctly. Does anyone know what to do? She does have an extra bridge if there's just a problem with the bridge itself. She's just starting and doesn't play on the G string yet, so it's not too much of a problem for the moment, but it will be a problem soon.

Anyone seen one like it? It's not shaped on the lower bout end. Last 5mm of the upper end broke off. Cross section is rectangular, not rounded off.

Hi guys! I will be in Lyon, France for a few days (visiting from the US), and I wanted to take this opportunity to get a BAM violin case. Can you let me know of any shops/luthiers that would carry BAM cases? Thanks so much!

Hello, My first ever post here. I am visiting New York City next month and want to know if you guys have any suggestions for any violin related places to visit - shops. museums, etc, etc. NYC has Piano Row. Is there a equivalent for string instruments in NY, something like Rue Rome in Paris? I am not planning to do violin shopping but I might be getting some accesories. Any recommendations? Thanks! Dear all, I am planing to ship my violin for the VSA competition by Fedex from the UK to the USA. I find the process to be difficult to understand and am not satisfied with the help I have received from Fedex: they told me that I will need to pay duties and taxes entering the US but none for bringing the violin back to the UK. When I told them, that, considering a retail value of 20 odd thousand US$ this would be a lot of money and that I was not going to sell it in the US. She recommended me to declare a lower value of 1000 US$. The violin, when imported from the UK, has an import duty rate of 3.2%. At a value of 20 000 this would sum up to 640$, at a value of 1000$ to 32$. The 32$ sounds like a viable option, but still not quite right. The other issue about declaring the lower value is that the violin will only be insured for 1000$. Is there someone who has looked into it more into depth and can come up with some suggestions, experiences? Best, Philip

Somewhat challenging arrangement of the famous Londonderry Air (O Danny Boy) for violin and 'cello. I'm giving away individually licensed pdf copies to interested performers, temporarily, though that doesn't mean you can photocopy or reproduce in any other way. Appendix gives some intonation background for playing in tune. tuned digital demo at https://soundcloud.com/williamcopper/547sd and perusal score at www.hartenshield.com/0547SD_Londonderry.pdf William Copper

Does anyone have any info about violins bearing this label? The label is pink, with black words saying "Heinr. Moritz Schuster Markneukirchen". Any idea of the quality of sound, workmanship, value, identification points, photos etc, on these violins? Only info I could find was the following: "Heinrich Moritz Worked circa. 1871-1930 Markneukirchen. Brother of Hermann Schuster, below. Worked in Russia, Germany, and France before establishing his own workshop in the Kirchstrasse, Markneukirchen 1871. Continually experimented with tone improvements." I would assume there have been other violin copies made with this label - not from the original maker. Thank you.

Well, I've finally decided to bite the bullet and share with the world my crazy musings. Hopefully (if the file thing works), there will be pictures of my latest violin which still needs a few touches. The idea behind this one was to make as close as I could get to a Strad in both looks and sound. I have used Alizarin color concentrate and dark rosin varnish plus ground from Joe. The maple was all bosnian, the top and bar Engelmann spruce from Simeon Chambers. Originally I had planned on using boxwood fittings but after reading about Roger's aversion to it I took his reasoning into consideration and went with ebony. I have been using PI strings on my own instruments mainly because I find they give me a very good pallet to work with - and don't impart any particular quality on an instrument as some other strings do. Sound was very important in this project and I have been getting a lot of interesting feedback. One person said it was 'too even'. Many people have questioned this violin's carrying ability. I think this is mostly because the sound is not 'sharp' or loud-sounding. There's no doubt it fills a concert hall. If I can I'll upload a sound sample. For me this is violin#4. Any questions or advice will be welcomed!

Where would you say this violin originated? (Neither the pictures nor the violin belongs to me. It is a violin for sale, and the owner believes it to be of Italian/French origin, and definitely not cottage industry. ) It bears a label "Hirish" inside apparently.

This is an odd looking fiddle http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-INTERESTING-OLD-EARLY-19TH-CENTURY-VIOLIN-/231319852515?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35dbbcd5e3 Does anyone know what could have caused the lines across the front which look rather like tummy tuck scars!?

Hi there, I started practicing vibrato since the day I got my first violin, almost 4 years ago. As I went on, it got much better/easier obviously, and I went through a dreaful time where my intonation and vibrato was problematic, so ofcourse, the sound was horrible for a while (I later read the best is to have good intonation first, then move onto vibrato). My question is: Some days my vibrato seems fantastic to me. It feels as if it just happens naturatlly, no tention, no effort, I dont even focus on it. My hand just does the movement on its own. Other days, I just cant seem to get my hand moving properly. It feels as if the muscle controlling this motion just wont cooperate. It feels as if I have no strength in that arm/hand. The duration that this happens for varies, sometimes being a day, sometimes being a week. Why does this happen? How can you overcome those "weak" days? Ive heard people saying if you get one of those days, put the violin in the case, and close it for the day, then try the next day. Is this the best advice? Is there something else I can work on to "push through"? I know it takes years to develop a "singing tone" on the violin, and years to develop a great vibrato. Just thought someone might have advice regarding this. Thank you.

I would appreciate some help regarding the following 2 violins. VIOLIN 1: Label: Otto Viener in Mittenwalt an der Iser 19(49) - the 49 is written in. One piece back. 2 piece bottom rib construction The fluting doesnt go in to the VERY end of the violin scroll. Anyone know if this "Otto Viener" was an individual maker or is it just a label used by someone who sold imported violins? Any idea if this violin was made in Mittenwalt? I have my doubts, due to the scroll fluting not going in till the very end. Maybe he was someone who imported violins from other areas and placed his own label? Photos: Please keep in mind the lighting is very bad. The violin is more orange colored than the "redness" which appears in the photos. I can try to take better pictures tomorrow in better light should it be nessicary. See first reply for VIOLIN 2.

I don't have much feedback from string players, but I've begun notating all scores with intonation markings. The recent "Romance" for violin and orchestra as an example. Dare I keep on with the practice, or are my string player friends going to rebel? Hi, sorry for making another bridge curve/shape topic, since there are already some out there, but instead of resurrecting an old topic, it might be better to make a new one. So first let me start by saying I tried quite a few different bridge templates. Ive tried making my own template, using a 42mm radius, aswell as checking that to the 42mm radius playing surface. I downloaded a bridge template, but all seem to have the same problem. As I go up higher in positions when playing, it gets harder and harder to play one string only. I cannot use the pressure that I would like, as it would cause 2 strings to be played, or even 3 strings. I like to play strong, with enough pressure. Does anyone perhaps have any suggestions about what I can do? I want to make a new bridge template, different from the one Ive been using, so any advice on this will be appreciated. Also, what is the usual preference of classical players, regarding bridge shapes/curves/radius? Thank you.

Hi, How do you get a perfectly smooth surface for varnishing when making a violin? It seems there is always a few tool marks left over when I try. Any advice on this? Thank you.

If using shellac to seal the wood before varnishing, can you brush it on or would you apply it like when french polishing with shellac? Thank you.

I have an old violin (about 100 years old) that I had restored at my local shop recently. When in the shop I had them put on a set of Dominants (seeing how they are basically a standard to start with.) but the G was very thin and the instrument overall too bright. So I swapped a set of plain gut strings onto the violin and it was much happier (gamut tricolor.) Now that my guts are wearing, I'm looking into what to put on next, but feel very lost. The violin is smaller than most moderns, very light and narrow. I assume low tension, dark strings are needed, which brands of synthetics would you recommend? Thank you!

This is currently my only old violin, claiming to be a Vuillaume copy, but I'm not sold that it goes further than the stamp/fake label. The instrument was recently set up and repaired to be in playing condition after being out of order for a very long time (came to me with open seams and the tailpiece glued to the top!) After being on the forums for a small amount of time (very small compared to the lifespan of a violin) I can guess the most likely answer to where the violin was made, but thought I'd ask anyway, just got my picture posting privilege so might as well use it while the instrument was at my local luthier, the original fittings (ebony) were removed and you can see that the violin has pins holding the neck and tail blocks in place (wooden pins, not nails.) I tried to picture the areas I noticed people normally ask for, if I missed something in my inexpert photoshoot, feel free to ask for it, but I doubt it'll be necessary. Thanks for looking! Also, my apologies that the photos are upside down, guess I'm not 100% proficient with an Ipad.
