Hi everyone! I am a newbie playing violin and was hoping you could help me out picking my first violin! I have practiced for about 3 months now on a beginner violin I borrowed. Now I know for sure I want to continue learning. My budget is 300€. The options I have found: Alfred Stingl by Höfner AS-180-V 4/4 Violin Outfit 260€ Karl Höfner SE II Violin Set 4/4 322€ Stentor SR1500 Violin Student II 4/4 192€ Stentor SR1542 Violin Graduate 4/4 240€ Stagg VN-4/4 HG Violin Set 229€ Artino VN-135 Violin Set 4/4 215€ They all come with a case and bow. Hello, My violin is Joseph Dall'agio Fecit in Mantua Anno 1828. It doesn't have A certificate so I am not sure if it is original. What do you do think about this violin? Is it really made in 1828? Is it original? The luthier is selling 18.000 euro but Joseph Dall'agio's other certified violins are 20.000-30.000 euro on the internet. I will be happy if you can help.

Hi All - first time poster. I have recently purchased several nice quality instruments from a local deceased estate. Including several violins. One of them is an 1890 Hawkes & Son. "The Professor Violin" in pretty good condition. One of the others (pictured below) has an old looking label inside which reads: GIOVAN PAULO MAGGINI BRESCIA 1686 Obviously this is not a real Maggini, but it is oldish. Judging by the age of the cases and other violins I got, I am guessing late 19th century. So my question is, given it is a fake, but still a hundred or so years old does it still have some value? If so what sort of value? Also, is there a way to directly upload pictures to the forum, without having to use third party image hosts which bombard me with ads . I have lots more photos (none of which are great quality, sorry).

One of my friends just emailed me this eBay win and asked me about the name that is written on the label inside. He says there is also a monogram with letters look like OB inside a circle at the beginning of the name. I have a hard time deciphering the spelling of the violin maker's name so will some of the Maestronet experts out there help me out please. Who is this maker and what are the worth of his violins? Is the first letter of his last name Q? P? B? R? I have not seem this name before. The spelling is Greek to me. I will appreciate any information or comments. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/331839972855?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Hi, I was just given an older Amati copy violin. It in very poor condition, I'm going to restore it. The top will be off, I'll post the label when the top is off if I can figure out how to do pictures off my phone. Looks like two signatures on the inside, varying Amati signatures. I've been told this happened regularly when they were brought through Ellis Island? My main question, there is a signature in ink on the G side of the violin between the bouts. It looks like Corcos?" I have a picture, but haven't been able to figure out how to post it yet... Does anyone have any idea what this signature might be from? The only thing that I've been able to find online is that Corcos is an area in Sicily? Thank you for any input.. Tedimay

I've recently been inspired to design and make a new viola. I thought it might be fun to post some of my progress pics to anybody who might be interested... Here's a picture of the plate I joined last week for the viola back. I slightly undercut the notches you see to be about halfway up the full thickness of the plate so as to even out the pressure on the seam when I clamp.

My first 5-string violin (basically a violin with a C string) doesn't seem all that bad but it isn't all that good either. I am hoping to get some feedback regarding the sound and ways to improve it. For comparison, I have included a sound clip from a 14-inch viola (it was converted from a Chinese no-label violin to a viola for my daughter. The instrument actually sounded better as a small viola than a violin.) The strings are violin Larsen E, vioiin Dominant A, D, G, and Infeld C for small violas. I think the C string side of the bridge is cut a tad too low. Plucking the C string with medium force leads to a buzz. Here are a couple of images. One for the 5-string and one for the small viola (which has no buzz). EDIT: See next post for the sound files. The original ones were incorrectly encoded.

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/43188454_early-23-violin-no-makers-name-evident I came across this when I was looking at lot 88a, a bow by Jas Tubbs (which has mysteriously been removed from the sale). I know its a bit of a stretch, but since bow and fiddle were likely a team, it may be that this might be quite a pleasant sounding fiddle with a bit of love?

Dear violinists and friends, I first started the violin (with a private teacher) halfway through the 6th grade, when I was about to turn 12. At the time I was not very serious, and did not practice very much. However, ever since listening to maxim Vengerov live a few months back, I have been practicing seriously (4 hrs a day). The materials I am currently working on is as follows: Carl Flesch (just started this week), Czardas by Monti (just finished this week), Mazas (working on No. 3 this week), 2,4,6 positions by Harvey Whistler (I know how to play the positions, can't sight read in them yet though), Melodious Double Stops Book 1 (almost finished, I am working on No. 25 this week), and Sevcik Op. 2 Volume 1 (the one with bowings for the chords, we skip around in this one). I really love the violin, in its entirety. Given my current level, do you think there is a possibility for me to minor in violin performance (as in would I pass the auditions). I am currently in the 10th grade. Thx

Hello again, I had posted previously about a violin I was given by my mother-in-law and ended up appraising at Shar. To make a long story short, she found 2 more violins of her great-grandfather's after sorting through her mother's house which was sold. One does not appear to be in any condition that could be played without a lot of work (body is separating all over the place, neck is not attached, no soundpost, bridge, pegs, weird carvings in back), which I did not take. The other one looks in better condition than the first I was given. Here is a photo of the violin #3 which looks in very bad condition - aside from seams coming apart all over and unattached neck, the back looks like it has cracked in two and someone has carved a design into the wood quite roughly. There are no labels I could see inside. We did not take this one home with us when we visited this weekend. Violin #2 looks in much better shape. Including photos below (14 total in count). http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/rinamypics/slideshow/Violins%20no%202%20and%203 I'm bringing it to Shar Music when they are open (not open till Tuesday, and I'll have to call since it's Christmas week to make sure they are) but thought I'd ask you lovely experts and enthusiasts on your thoughts re: identification. I've included photos of the repair label (in 1974 by the same person who did repair on violin #1) and the "maker label" (looks like Strad copy, no mention of country of origin). Thanks for your input, I'm surprised that my mother-in-law's great-grandfather had so many violins but I suppose that wasn't unusual. (He immigrated from Ireland to Canada during the Potato Famine). Best Regards, Rina

Hello! The other day I was curious to know who made my violin, since it was given to my dad and I had no idea where it was from. The print inside says "Matthias Thir" and underneath that "Vienna". Who is this, and does anybody have any info on it? I think itd be cool to know it's history Thx

Hi all, Just hoping you might be able to ID the maker of my violin. I was given it as a child and as it is in some serious need of restoration, I am hoping to ID it before I take it to a repairer. It says GVILLAMI inside but a google search has returned little to nothing! As I am a newbie, I am unable to upload photos. But if you know of any leads, anything will help. Thank you in advance!

I have a 4/4 violin with a label that reads, "Joh.Bapt.Schweitzer fecit ad forman Antonii Stradiuarii Pestini 18__" ~ it is dark brown in color and looks very old. It also has a very skinny neck. I can't upload pictures/don't know how - and i know the lack of pictures make it hard to really tell anything but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I was told that it has a $5000 value but I personally would like to know if it is real or a copy

My son has finished preschool this year, and starting next term he will be home schooled. I am planning on teaching him the violin, but I am in need on some advice for method books. I seem to remember starting out on the green String Builders book by Applebaum ages ago when I was in elementary school. My personal experience was public school orchestra from about the 4th grade through high school with some community orchestra experience. In high school I switched from violin to viola. I've heard a little about All for String and Essential Elements, but no experience with them. What are your take on these methods and what you recommend in place of/complementary to these?

Longish time lurker on account of having nothing to add and a lot to learn, but saw this... https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/42441505_antique-violin-an-interesting-violin-with-an-elongated and wondered what it is and what it sounds like? Tried Dr Google and found a single example for $750, said to be played Cello style on lap like a Gamba.
