Dear all, I'm about to start making my first cello. I'd like to get your insights on the process. I'm planing on making the back arching higher the the top arching according to the method described by Torbjörn Zethelius and I'd very much appreciate his comments to this post of mine. I know that the current measurements are with a higher top arching. I traced the model according to the method described by François Denis and would very much appreciate his comments too. I'm still confused about the rib height though. Please feel free to comment and modify my measurements. A list of measurements follows below. 1. Length of template and mold - 735 mm 2. Width of upper bouts - 346 mm 3. Width of CC bouts - 245 mm 4. Width of lower bouts - 435 mm 5. Rib thickness - 1.7 mm 6. Height of ribs at end pin - 125 mm (The original one according to the poster is 123 mm) 7. Height of ribs at neck root - 120 mm (The original one according to the poster is 117 mm) 8. Arching height - top - 32 mm 8.a. Top thickness - center - 5.5 mm and 4.5 at FF-holes and closer to the edge 8.b Top thickness at lower bouts - 5.0 mm and 4.0 mm closer to the edge 8.c. Top thickness at upper bouts - 5.0 mm and 4.0 mm closer to the edge 9. Arching height - back - 30 mm 9.a. Back thickness - center - 7.0 - 8.0 mm 9.b. Back thickness at lower bouts - 3.8 mm 9.c. Back thickness at upper bouts - 3.7 mm 9.d. Back thickness at CC bouts - 4.0 mm 10. Edge thickness of lower and upper bouts - top - 5.5 mm 11. Edge thickness of CC bouts - top - 6.0 mm 12. Edge thickness of lower and upper bouts - back - 5.0 mm 13. Edge thickness of CC bouts - top - 5.5 mm 14. Fluting depth compared to edge thickness - 1.0 mm 15. Hello violin maker friends: I am new to this site and also new to violin making. I am making my second violin. When using the bandsaw to cut the wood for the back of the violin from outline, I forgot to allow for the button that the heel of the neck supposed to rest on! Can I glue a piece of wood to the body or should I scrap my maple and start with a new back? If I glue it, would it hold the pressure applied by the neck, or any other issues? Thanks for your input. As i have almost no experience in violins, would anybody please tell me IF the grains on this violin are real wood grains or fake!! (Drawn.. I was told before there could be fake drawn grains on violin wood)

So over the years that I've owned my place, I've had this notion that I would eventually use the trunk of the cherry tree in front to make the back and sides of a violin. This year the tree became so large that it needed to be removed from the small yard in front of our building. I requested that they leave me the trunk, which they have done. It is a heavy son of a gun. I need someone to come cut it into slabs and I have a few questions. Is there a particular kind of saw person that does this? Is it something a handyman can do? What thickness should the slabs be? How do they remove the bark? Thanks for any info.

This outstanding 50-year old documentary reaches IMHO the very essence of the violin making craft/art, but at the same time with each cadre, it is witnessing remarkable film making art/craft. Hope you will enjoy watching, no less than I did.

through the years i have had and made violins with a "wolf tone" on the b note on a violin A string.... drives me nuts.... what can be done to fix it??

Do you think violin/viola/cello makers should be able to play their own instruments for optimum sound adjustment? Or for better understanding how to improve their instruments? Personally I do some parts of setup according to "feel", or "sound improvement" rather than sticking to perfect numbers. I spoke with someone long ago who said he would never buy a violin made by someone who cant play violin him/herself. What is your opinion on this? Personally i think it would definitely help to have someone around who can play the instrument, but if you understand the practical part of violin making and crafting, but cant play at concert level, should it matter?

We're gathering research for a talk he will give in a few months about music in New Mexico and a main topic is Arnaldo DeBassaccio. We know that he came to Mexico with Peter of Ghent in the 1500's, but that's about it. Hi again. Can someone please tell me where I might be able to find some wood carving gouges online? Ive been looking at hardware shops at so many places locally already but couldn't find any other than the normal flat surface chisels. Ive been able to find small gouges for the scroll, but nothing big enough for the body of a violin. Also, since I live in South-Africa, please only recommend websites where they ship internationally, if possible. I went to look on this website and found http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product/715257/Gouges-Blade-Width-24-mm.htm today, but the shipping cost alone is 32Euro, which is almost twice the cost of the gouge itself. Only other "bigger" gouge Ive been able to find locally, has a heel underneath the cutting area, which requires you to hold the tool at about a 60degree angle, and then lifting the front up to cut out a little piece of wood. You cannot just push it through the wood normally. Thank You. I'm also attaching a picture for those not exactly sure what I'm looking for.
