Hello, I came across the website of luthier, Boris Sverdlik. He has come up with a violin varnish that has no oil, alcohol, or pigments; of course the recipe is a highly guarded secret. Any thoughts on how he may have accomplished this? https://www.sverdlikviolins.com/varnish Thanks, Trey

I took my violin to a Luthier because of another problem and, without asking anything, he just spread some shiny varnish all over my violin because "it was too matte" for his taste! I really liked my violin the way it was before, and it really makes me sad seeing it with that horrible chunky layer of varnish that is not even well spread! I really loved the way it was before and it has been my violin since I was a kid and it's so ugly now... Is it possible to take of just the last layer of varnish?

Hi, I received a violin recently to repair with the top plate sanded down. Apparently someone in the family (the family to whom the violin belongs to) thought it would be a good idea to remove the varnish with sandpaper, thus, leaving the top in terrible shape. I've already cleaned the top plate and removed most of the sandpaper marks, so I thought I would ask for advice here so long on getting the color matched to the back and sides. I haven't varnished a dark violin yet, so thought I would ask here first. I also plan on testing everything first on a "test violin" I have available. The violin appears brown, but in light a more reddish color. Any idea which pigments I can try or what varnish to use? I'll add pictures below. Any useful advice would be very helpful. Thank you.

As the title says, this was my first attempt at varnishing. As you might see on some of the pictures, there are still surface scratches from removing all the "nits" or whatever you want to call those little varnish bumps in some of the photos, but that has been polished out since the photos was taken. It was very hard to get good lighting to clearly show what the violin looks like, and taking the pictures with my phone didnt help that problem. The different photos were taken at different times and in different lighting, some with the flash on, and some with the flash off. Would like to know what you think. Currently only the back in varnished, as the front needs repairs. (As I mentioned in the previous topic, the violin was painted over with actual paint, which is the reason why I had to revarnish. I understand that revarnishing a violin causes a huge loss in value, and should never be done in normal circumstances) The varnish is a Colophony, and linseed based, and I used differnet artist oil colors mixed with the varnish to get the coloring. I used alcohol to "wear" some of the varnish down.

Vážení houslaři Mam nějaké otázky k marciana violin varnish receptuře, budu velmi vděčný za všechny odpovědi. Snažil jsem se přečíst co nejvíce zde na diskusi, ale mam nějaké nejasnosti. Zakladní vzorec je 2 díly oleje, 1 díl řecké hřiště, 1 díl mastic 1. řecké hřiště je surová borová kalafuna. Když jsem použil jak doporučil Manfio http://www.kremer-pigmente.com/en/mediums--binders-und-glues/amber-colophony-60205.html a vařil s olejem, objevilo se mnoho sraženin. Zda se že jsou to ne čistoty v přírodní kalafuně. Když se filtrují možná 40 procent z váhy dolů a tim se naruší vzorce poměr. Myslíte že je s tím takto počítáno nebo je lepší nejprve kalafunu svařit filtrovat a odvážit znovu množství dle marcina recept? 2. V receptuře se piše díl mastic. Myslí se jakýkoliv mastic or "Mastic" ? Muže být použit ne" Mastic" ale Venetian turpentine? Doposud jsem použival komerční violin varnish, od http://www.hammerl.com/ nebo Cremonense varnish od http://www.oldwood1700.com/ a byl jsem spokojen, ale už mi vadí, že ne vím co na svoje housle dávám, jaké složení. U karel Vavra in Praha jsem dostal zapomenutý 50 let starý violin varnish s levandulolovým olejem (cítím ho), je krásně sametový a byl jsem osobně u Hammerl a již tuto recepturu nemají a ne umí ho udělat. Recepty změnily. Tak jsem se rozhodl že se pokusím o vlastní výrobu laku. Ale ne spirit varnish. Moc děkuji za odpovědi, sory my bad english
