Years ago, upon the demise of my father, I was landed with the task (amongst enough others) of sorting out some old English bows. After plenty of head scratching, I worked out a sort of ready - reckoner, where I identified 42 different features, or even quirks of these bows, and at what period said features/quirks were to be found, so that anybody should be able to work out from the chart the period when an old English bow was made, or, should bits be missing, what any replacement part should look like, if it is intended to look authentic. The Strad have published it on their website, so I see little advantage of spending ages posting it here again, since it can be read (without any pay wall or similar) here see below To get to the ready – reckoner chart, you have to click either on the PDF link in the article or here; see below Although there is a “Comment” function in the “Strad” online edition, I see no reason to not have a discussion here The Strad have changed their Home Page, so the links no longer work. The new URL for the article is now https://www.thestrad.com/the-british-bow-a-rough-guide-to-dating-and-development/5357.article and the Chart: https://du4dv89wgxa89.cloudfront.net/Uploads/i/q/m/britishbow1_649622.pdf

Hello, i´ve got a question: Does somebody know the results of the latest Beares Auction? I am very interested to know the prices for violins by Vuillaume and Sgarobotto, viola by Storioni and Lupot and Tubbs violin bows. Unfortunately you can´t see the results online. Thanks in advance for your answers.

I have a collection of Hill bows and I would like to know the distinguishing characteristics and/or stamps used by Tubbs & Allen. I want to add these 2 makers to my collection and want to have some degree of familiarity with their output while at Hill. I have 3 Tubbs bows made post Hill which are pretty easy to spot but I'd like to know if his production while at Hill had any other telltale characteristics. I also have bows made by lesser former Hill makers (e.g. Bultitude, Watson) which don't compare favorably to Hill makers such as Yeoman, Napier, etc. (IMHO).
