Disclaimer: The words “violin” and “guitar” are used to represent families of instruments. Currently, some of us on The Pegbox are trying to identify and understand a violin made in Ukraine in 1988 (nineteen eighty-eight). One mystery is the luthier’s reasons to install a non-ebony fingerboard. There are several obvious possibilities: access to materials, financial factors, tonal considerations, player requirements. This led me to think about some less obvious reasons for luthiers to use non-traditional or “alternative” tonewoods when making a "traditional" violin or guitar. Here are some reasons that have guided or limited me when designing or making instruments: The instrument is made entirely with wood that is native to a certain region such as province, state, small island nation. Example: I designed a guitar with North Carolina native tree species: Black Walnut, Red Spruce, and Persimmon. Other designs specify St. Lucian species or Ontario species. The instrument is made entirely from wood salvaged from one particular building or vessel, such as the client's home or yacht. The instrument was designed by a non-luthier, visual artist who wanted a piece of functional art. The instrument was designed to be made from woods of a specific botanical genus. The client refused certain wood species or colours (natural or dyed). The luthier and/or client was allergic/sensitive to certain species of wood. So, we see some valid, reasonable limits on tonewood choices that many people are unaware of, or forget, when surveying a "non-standard" traditional stringed instrument. I hope this knowledge helps you in your future luthier endeavours. Keep an open mind. Think LATERALLY. Be empathetic. Never assume. Thank you for reading. Randy O'Malley

Stock available for linings, blocks, necks, back plates. I am selling at cost on behalf of the property owner - wood came with the property of a deceased Texas maker - and I have exclusive access to what is a substantial supply. Photos are representative. Based on the likelihood the maker was not still collecting wood after he turned 80 (he died at 102), the stuff is at least 20 years old. Process: contact me at julian@cossmannviolins.com. Do not contact me through this listing as I am rarely on MN any more. Give me your specs and I will select pieces and send you photos from the site. Once you have committed - this is based on an honor system -, I will transport to Austin (about a 2 1/2 hour drive) and ship from there. Once you have received the shipment, you pay me. Price equals: owner's price for the wood + my time in making the selection (5-hour driving time and gas not included) + transport and shipping costs. If shipping costs can be saved by some kind of in-person hand-off, I will try to accommodate that, e.g. if we are both attending a workshop, you can meet me half-way between the workshop and your location, you are coming through Austin. Shipping time subject to Austin's not exceeding Stage 3 of its Covid risk-based assessment for the community (we are headed back to Stage 3 as I write.)

Hello Luthiers, Who is interested in a field trip to the mountains in Colorado to learn about and gather spruce and other tonewoods? This is Simeon Chambers. I am no longer in the business of tonewood, but have tremendous knowledge I can impart on a field trip where incredible spruce is found. Last year we obtained many bolts of excellent spruce. Moderators: I read the terms and conditions, I am not a commercial wood dealer anymore, nor a dealer in wood at all. If you want this in another category, please put it in the proper spot. Here is the deal. It will happen if there is interest, August 15, 16, 17. Thursday through Saturday we camp in the woods, near the spruce. We will have proper permits. People can stay in a town if they wish, instead of camping. There is room for up to 15 people. Reasonable fitness is good. We will camp at 9,000 feet. For details, I can be reached via email at sales@toyfishfactory.com or phone 303 507 5225

Parting with a one piece cello back, european maple. Bought this 10+ years ago from traditional tone woods in Austria, and it bears the stamp of this business. Air-dried, ready to use. Beautiful blister figure, slab cut, plenty of width and thickness for any model. No checks or sketchiness. No longer available. $1000 + ship. Have a few others as well that I might be willing to sell. sanzoneguitars@gmail.com

In most cases I have matching ribs and scroll blocks as well. I have some engelman spruce available also. Several violin and viola, and 2 cello. top grade violin/viola maple sets: $150 second grade violin/viola maple sets: $85 violin/viola spruce: $50-$85 cello tops: $150/$400 Please pm me with requests for more pictures or info. grayviolin@hotmail.com thanks, Damon Gray p.s. I got some nice big viola size spruce (500mm) , It is in very nice wedges and the grain seems to be just about perfectly quartered. It is stamped 2013 so it is a bit new to use on anything but I was going to put it away in my hope chest/wood scholarship closet for a few years. Should it be sawn in two so it will season faster or should I just leave it alone. It is european wood if that matters. How new is too new? The spruce is really something, you can run your hands over the edges and the stuff just sings when you hold your ear to it. It smells so lovely and clean. OK, I'm a nut case :-) I I was thinking that I would need to find someone with a large bandsaw with a re-sawing blade or can it be done by hand (not by me!) DLB

I have a bunch of Engelmann Spruce which is cut and split into sizes suitable for double bass. This is master grade wood cut from a tree killed in the "Blackwell Fire" in central Idaho in 1994. This wood was cut into 52" rounds and then split into quarter and eighth segments which measure 52" X 12"-17". The log has a density of .33-.34 and the moisture content is 7-9% with straight, even winter grain lines. I have about 30 tops, maybe more. Available individually or potentially as whole. If someone wanted all of them I'd guess the whole load would be about 1500-2000 lbs. Individual tops can be shipped via USPS but if someone wanted much more than a few tops he/she would have to either bring a truck to Idaho or arrange freight. The third to last photo is of about one third of the total amount of wood available. Individual bass tops are $400-$500 ( there is some variation of quality within the log). Cello and violin pieces are also available. Price for the whole load can be negotiated.
