I've been trying out cellos ranging from 5k to 30k. What I found so far is that between $5k and $10k there's always a flaw or two, most common one being different tonal qualities from A, D and G, C strings. And D string sounding muffled under the ear as you go past 4th position. As I go past 10k the occurrence of this flaw is significantly decreased. Is this a function of the instrument itself or is it just the shop paying more attention to setup of more expensive cellos?

I really have no clear concept of acceptable shopping etiquette. Obviously, if you are in the market for an item you will go out and buy it. But what if you are just seeing what is out there and an immanent purchase isn't a given...but...if you run across a gem you just might purchase it? I am always scared to ask just to look at something because I don't want to waste anyone's time. Yet I have made the odd impulse purchase as well. And often I might not know if and what to purchase without seeing several examples of the object in real life. How does one do that without asking to see an example? When does a vendor entertain a maybe customer versus showing them the door?

I have some names and numbers already (and I know this question has already been asked here on occasion): where should I go to see and play some fabulous violins and violas. Thanks. Ciao.
