Curious if anyone out there can tell me anything about this violin. The only thing I know about it is that it’s an imitation Strad based on the label, but it was a gift from an ex years and I can’t for the life of me remember where he acquired it from. It’s clearly in pretty rough shape (seems to have suffered water damage?) so I’m not expecting that it’s worth anything, but I’m mostly curious about an estimated age and origin. In the case with it was a really nice pernambuco bow with a real ivory end screw and frog with the number 4 (Roman numeral) scratched into it as the only marker, and a couple of these unique looking handmade pegs. I don’t have a photo of the bow because it’s at my luthier getting refurbished and rehaired. Any insight, opinions, or guesses you have would be appreciated. I don’t have the money to bring it in for an appraisal (nor do I think it would be worth it given it’s condition) but I’m curious about it! Thanks!

Hello! I have had this violin for a little while and I would like to know more about it. On the inside it says “Tone ____ and Repaired by A.W Van Dorsten, No. 542 Maker Dec. 1916” I also am really interested in the design on the back, and would like to know more about who could have put the design on it, and if it was common to have that design. Hello all. This is my first post so please be kind. I have a violin (handed down to me) labelled H. DERAZEY and in very good condition. I can find some info online but aware the name was bought and continued after his death. Any info on what those more knowledgeable than me think of this violin would be great. I've played for 30 years, although wouldn't consider myself proficient by any stretch, even so this instrument sounds beautiful (compared with a copy strad which was until now my favourite). I will attempt to attach some photos. Thank you in advance.

Hello: I'm new here and honestly don't know what violin I bought, what was the manufacturer, age, etc... Can you help me with identification? I require some more work - they are not perfect. Link: Is the back flame fake? 100% not. (My father taught me, if you're not sure, ask.) I know the difference between factory and handmade violins. I have no problem spotting a fake violin, a fake label, a repainted violin and an old violin from a new one. 1) I do not sell or offer fake violins. 2) I'm not sure of the provenance of these violins (handmade violin? - 100% yes). 3) It's been repainted - I'm sure it is 4) Modified commercial violin (I haven't seen such F-holes on a commercial violin since I can remember). Didn't they want to expand or modify them? In my opinion: made around 1820 to 1900. Old England or Tyrolean School Handmade violin (Amateur or Master not factory) Work both outside or inside the violin + choice of maple wood A+++ Anyway, thanks for all the replies. (I apologize for the English - my native language is Czech).

Hello friends: A friend of my mom wanted to sell me an old German violin. It has a label inside which says: copy of Giovan Paolo Maggini made in Germany From the information on the Internet, I assume that it is a German factory violin of the 20th centrury. It has been repaired several times and it has 4 scrolls and a nice tone. Yes I really like that tone. On its back there's a pattern, I'm wondering if it means the brand of the factory or something else. I think the pictures may help. My mom's friend tell me it should cost 4500 dolars. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks, Monica

Last month I purchased an “old French violin” from a gentleman in Ventenac-Cabardes, France. It is labeled: "Alex-dre DELANOY à Bordeaux, élève de JB Vuillaume, 1914". The violin also has a hand-inscription above the label "Modèle d'après Guadagnini" as pictured below. So, I’ve been told to be highly skeptical about labeling in violins with no validated provenance. My luthier in the Washington, D.C. area is not an expert in old European violins, but he said it is certainly an older instrument and in very nice condition. He believes it is of French origin, and postulates it may have been made by JTL in the early-mid 1900’s. I Googled JTL and see it was a mass-production Mirecourt workshop from the mid-1800’s until about 1970. Wiki shows many names used on JTL production labels, but Alexandre Delanoy is not among them. Interestingly, in his early days, Jérôme Thibouville was a partner in the instrument maker Husson-Buthod-Thibouville, and Delanoy apprenticed under Buthod in JB Vuillaume’s workshop in Paris. Not sure if there is anything to make of that indirect connection, but still interesting. My violin instructor is a well-credentialed professional free-lance violinist on the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore music scene. Last night he saw my new “old violin” for the first time. I must say, it sounds magnificent in his hands! He was very impressed and said it is a very nice instrument. He too thinks it is from France. He pointed out the “mascara” along the edges of the scroll, and told me that is typical of French violins (although I don’t know if mascara on the edges is a characteristic unique to French violins). He also told me it “sounds” like a French violin. I don’t know how a French violin sounds versus a German, Romanian, Italian, or Chinese instrument, but after playing it, my instructor agreed this is a French violin. So, I enjoy reading many of the Maestronet Forums topics and posts. I think there are many members who genuinely know what they are talking about. I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts about this violin. Do you agree it was likely made in France in the early 1900’s? Is it possible that this violin actually came from Delanoy’s Bordeaux workshop? If so, what are you seeing that supports that opinion? If not, why not? I’m anxious to hear your thoughts and grateful for your input.

Hi,I bought this violin in the year 2000. The man who sold it to me said that the violin was 200 years old (I don't know if it's true or not), but didn't know anything else about the instrument. It has a very warm and mellow sound. I don't want to sell it because it has a very sentimental meaning to me but I'm just curious. Can anyone please help me with more information? Any thoughts on age or origin? Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone! I am new to Maestronet so I will introduce myself a little bit. I am a violinist, studied at Curtis and play concerts for a living, but I'm also a big instruments enthusiast! Love to read the Maestronet forum, get to know different instruments and follow the latest auctions. Here is a violin which has been in my family for a long time, and I have taken it to different people to get an idea of what it is. Most of them seem to agree that it is an 18th century Italian/Brescian violin, but I haven't been able to get any more info. Would love to hear your opinions! I used to play on it when I was a kid and the sound is beautiful and projecting, although it has a shorter stop length. Currently, I play on a JBV Guarneri model.

Hi folks I’m brand new here! Wondering if yuoj all could help me speculate about who might have made this violin. I purchased it yesterday from a local shop owner and friend. It is circa 1750’s and made in Germany. I do know that it was restored in the late 1800’s by Andras Bergmann in Budapest. Has anybody else come accross a similar violin? The neck is grafted all the cracks were repaired. Also does anyone know why it has turned really dark in the middle? Thanks!

Hey folks! My first post here! I got a violin from a friend in Germany that I'm trying to find out about its origins, who the maker might be, all that stuff, but I have very little to go by, since it's unlabeled. Inside, I found a big 'S' branded on the upper block, and what seems to be the letters 'C S' branded on the top plate and the bass bar. The corner blocks are flush with the ribs and the linings go over them instead of into them. On the back, south of the bass F-hole, I found some pencil scribbles that read "C.S.- = 2 1936". It has been suggested that might not be the date it was made, but the date it was repaired. The scroll style seems a lot like I've seen on violins from Schönbach... It had some cracks that were repaired sometime in the past, but overall is in good condition. I got it all cleaned up and set up, but still the mystery of where and who made it continues! Has anyone ever seen one like this before?

Hi All, As a follow up to my recent acquisition, I was wondering if anyone could recommend recordings of real stainer instruments in both baroque and modern set up, solo and ensemble? I recently came across the clip of Jorg-michael Schwarz briefly discussing the different qualities of his stainer along with some lovely playing. I have noticed that my particular stainer-esque german violin has a bell like tonal quality to the A and E string. It is a very different to my ‘strad G forme’ copy. So wondering if this is a common quality found in the better Stainer copies. My friend’s Marchetti has a very similar quality on the A string so I was a bit confused how two very different patterned instruments could have similar tonal characteristics. Thanks, -
Hello everyone, I have acquired a lovely sounding old violin. Apparently the instrument had been stored in pieces over the past 50 years or so before finally receiving some tender loving care a few months ago. (part of the f hole had been eaten by a hungry mouse, some table cracks but not serious, loss of varnish to top left side of table.) Back is in good condition with no sound post cracks etc. Anyway, I believe the instrument could be from around mid-1700s. Based on a Stainer model. Has a label dated 1660 but not pinning my hopes on that. The tone seems to have a bit of everything, rich deep sound on lower strings (viola like it played with a heavy arm) and pure sounding upper strings..So I reckon potentially lots of colours to be had from the instrument (with the right playing). Given the violin hasn’t been played in over 50 years I would imagine it would need some time to ‘wake up’. It's already a joy to play and projection is very good, which confuses me as I though fuller arched models did not have as much power and projection as the flatter arched models. Would be very grateful for any clues as to the region and even possible maker.. (wishful thinking) I like to think the violin lived a fruity life over the centuries and is now ready for more action. We have a old violin with certificate that was owned by my grandfather. He played on the Chicago symphony ochestra. Can any please help with any information you may have. I have a photo if the certificate but don't knoe how to load it.

I've owned this violin for decades, and had it restored about 10 years ago. It's never had a label as long as I've owned it, but has been described as "Possibly Austrian, mid-1800s". I was showing it to a friend over the weekend, and he commented that it reminded him of some fiddles he's seen made by Leopold Widhalm (1722-1775). The online photos I've looked at lend some credence to this but wondered the opinion of those here - I'm always amazed by the knowledge base here. http://www.karlwinkler.com/Old%20Violin.jpg Thanks!

Hello ! I've got this beautiful old violin. It seems to have a nice back and top but the scroll looks too long and the distance between "A" "D" and "E" "G" peg holes looks too long. However I would be glad if someone could probably tell me is it a masterpiece or a poor quality violin, how old is the violin and from which region probably is ?

I know its a bit of a stretch, but since bow and fiddle were likely a team, it may be that this might be quite a pleasant sounding fiddle with a bit of love?

Hello everyone! I need help to identify this old violin. My friend and I found her when we cleaned his grandfather's attic. We found it in a pretty bad condition, so I wonder whether it is worth the investment, or to use it as a souvenir in our café. I wonder how old and roughly where it is produced. I apologize for the quality of images and the fact that they are not taken as it is proposed here in forum, but these pictures are the only one I have now. Any help is appreciated. Hi, This is the 'old' violin whose odd looking bridge and finer tuner were posted in the following thread http://www.maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/331713-please-help-id-the-bridge-and-the-fine-tuner/#entry656660 I am looking for more info regarding this violin. The scroll was very well grafted. I had to look at it carefully to believe it is an acutal graft, not hand drawn. However, most of the seemmingly cracks on the violin are hand drawn black lines. There is one actual crack on the right top F hole. I am guessing this violin is made around 1850's in the Bohemian region. Hope the experts here could provide more info. It seems to imitate an even earlier style from the 1700's, basing on the fake cracks. Thank you and Happy Holidays. What appear to be cracks are acutally black lines drawn onto the violin

Any ideas? this violin came in today to my shop, no label. It was played many years ago in the Minnesota Orchestra. Looks like it was refinished at one time after 1940. Thin edging (3.5 mm) Good workmanship, strad f holes, More mellow than bright sound. Any ideas? The bow in the case is stamped Arthur Thoma. Octagon, silver mounted, three part parisian eye in Frog
