I've been putting together a violin starting from a cutout I found online, it's been a fun starter project. I'm almost at the point of installing the end pin, and I was curious if there is a standard diameter for end pins. I saw others on here say it should be a thicker than a peg, so I figured I may be able to shave it down to just the second hole in my peg shaver which is about 8.5mm at the opening. The reamer I'm using for the end pin hole has the same 1/30 taper as well. Does that sound like an appropriate width? Also for drilling the end pin hole, I wanted to confirm that I should drill fully through the block rather than just a certain depth. Thanks!

Hi all, I want to change my violin's end pin and I have already ordered the parts. I understand that it needs to be shaved to fit. Is the taper the same with the tuning pegs? Can I use a peg shaver ? I also ordered the peg shaver and awl for future use... thank you

It was determined on another thread (http://www.maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/329710-why-is-the-endpin-off-center/ ) that the end-pin hole of a violin I have was drilled off-center. So I intend to plug the existing hole and make a new hole to bring things in line. I have a few questions. What wood should I use to plug the hole, and where is a good place to get it? I would like to obtain the wood locally if possible. What is the usual taper of the end-pin hole? Could I use a peg-hole reamer? Please let me know of any related tips or pitfalls.

I've just acquired a student-quality violin, and I noticed that the strings are pulled about 2 mm from center toward the bass side of the fingerboard. Also, the tailgut and tailpiece are toward the bass side of the saddle. I find that the center of the end pin is about 3mm to the bass side of the seam in the lower bout, so that seems to be the root of the problem. How is that explained? I mean is it simply sloppy work, or was the endpin hole drilled off-center for some reason?
