I was looking on eBay for a cheap 1/16th 1/10th violin for my 4 year old granddaughter. I added one to my "watch list" and then noticed this. Although described as being in "good condition" the f-hole is mouse chewed. It is being sold (supposedly) by the children's charity Barnardo's. Am I right in believing mice do this in order to nest inside violins? If so, maybe they are marketing the violin as a hole. Ahem! Sorry - Freudian slip typo. I meant ...as a whole...in "good condition" for a mouse? They do say the violin shows "signs of use" - so that hypothesis is not disconfirmed if they are marketing it at mice rather than humans. Today, I bought a 3/4 size Bienfait violin on eBay for under £30. I feel sure it is a late 19th century early 20th century Saxony violin from what I have read online. They typically sold for 1 guinea and were beginner "trade" instruments. And yet I have found a couple of dealers advertising them as possibly French. I put the details of my online research about these violins on my recently created rescue violins blog site here. Any advice on the veracity - or not as the case may be - French angle would be very much appreciated.

(apart from the bridge that is placed the wrong way around ) It looks too new to be from 1949, and also the fingerboard looks as though it's just come out of the workshop. Would this be an example of a new Chinese instrument, with a fake label of a not too well-known Italian luthier, to make it not too obvious that it is something else, or could this be genuine? Joris

I recently came across this violin on ebay. Although it does seem to have some issues it appears to be well made. I have a violin made by WC Ehrmann in Albany New york in 1908 which I planning to sell to move onto a better one. I bought it a decade ago for 8000 dollars. How much should I sell it for or expect to earn? Ebay is a site I may use.

Hello everyone! I am a new member to this website, but I have often lurked around the forums without having signed up. I decided to sign up after digging through over 50 pages of this forum and through various topics/google searches/etc. Let me explain my situation: Many of you tell enthusiasts to avoid eBay altogether. I usually agree with this sentiment, but I've found a violin I need some help on. The seller is rather suspect, and has been mentioned many times over regarding misrepresentation of their instruments, shady practices, etc. I did research on said seller and found quite a few interesting things. I have always wanted a uniquely carved scroll. I first saw a lion head scroll when I was young and in a local community orchestra (and was so much of a go-getter that I would constantly bug my stand partner about borrowing her instrument should she ever wish to sell. She doesn't even play anymore since her arthritis and vision have become too poor.) I've liked them ever since. Anything unique about an instrument is fascinating to me, so I'm not particularly huge on mass-produced, modern instruments. I figured, after doing some research (and with my limited knowledge), that this particular violin was a German factory-made violin, which could potentially decrease the value significantly. I know that many Chinese makers now mass produce instruments of the Baroque style. I've seen some awesome/funky instruments with scalloped (pie crust?) edges, semi-rounded c bouts, or entirely corner-less (aka the guitar style?) I wouldn't be using this violin for any symphonic performances. I would get this instrument for (most likely) use with a Fishman pickup, since I currently don't have an electroacoustic violin for gigs where my Zeta Jazz Fusion's look doesn't really match the vibe of the performance. The seller DOES have some good pictures of the violin, and also has included a youtube link to samples of the violin being played (albeit out of tune, and with steel strings that sound horrible. I do like the tone somewhat, though I can tell the strings are smashing a lot of the natural resonance of the fiddle. Once again, I am NOT looking for an orchestral instrument. I'm mainly looking for a cool, unique, older instrument with this particular body type and an interesting scroll.) I've contacted the seller on eBay and received a somewhat vague, unhelpful answer regarding my questions regarding the violin's age, authenticity, appraisal, etc., as well as international shipping and return policy questions. ALL OF THAT BEING SAID. I know this particular instrument is NOT worth the pretty penny that the seller is charging, but what are the general thoughts you might have regarding this instrument? What would be a reasonable price for me to offer? I really love the unique look of it, and it would be a backup for gigs where I need an acoustic-looking but electric-sounding violin. I am not concerned with the value as much as what I would potentially be spending. I love older instruments, especially rare or unique ones. This would potentially be a "knocker" violin I could use for outdoor gigs as well (since I also play a lot of beach weddings and events where I don't feel comfortable bringing my orchestra-ready violin.) I also don't mind that it's not the highest quality, but want to make sure that I'm not going to be getting ripped off with a less-than-tasteful, factory-made instrument (especially if it's not actually from the 30s-40s like the ad purports.) Any thoughts or even links to similar instruments would be wonderful. Thank you for reading this post!

Dear fellow forum readers, Those who heard of the maker Joseph Hamberger, could you let you know your thought about this violin which is sold already but in any case looks interesting. To my (relatively) untrained eyes it is an original piece, I like the varnish on the front. Hi there, I recently borrowed a friend's viola, which she isnt using anymore. It is a non-expensive Palitino viola, 15.5inches. Unfortunately, to me it sounds incredibly nasal, and overall not what Im looking for. I want to buy my own viola, but unfortunately, unlike violins, there arent that many Antique violas on Ebay for affordable prices, like I got my beloved German cottage-industry violin. If I buy one of these, and it sounds dreadful, I could always try regraduating the top plate, change the bass bar, or if the varnish is ultra-thick I could revarnish it myself, or whatever might be suggested. My other option is to buy a white viola on Ebay, and go from there. Since this is for myself, time and effort is no concerning matter, so I wouldnt mind having to work on it myself, and since the viola wouldnt have any antique value, I see no reason for using a better varnish (if needed, and if it comes to that). What do you think? Any suggestions? I would really like a smaller Viola, but I doubt I'll find a cheaper one that sounds great which is 15.5 inch, so I guess 16-16.5 inch is a safer bet.

I am not an eBayer (hate on-line shopping, like to see stuff before I purchase it, hate S&H fees and unexpected Customs fees, *blahblahblah*)...but there are a few items I'm currently purchasing through "Buy Now" on eBay to (stuff I can't find easily or locally)...so I'll see if I find it a useful venue. So, in other words, I'm new at this. While I'm making these purchases - and to scratch a long-standing itch, I have been trying to buy an instrument from China. So it can't be too expensive. Hence I'm trying the auction route. I can't for the life of me win a bid. I've been doing this for 2 weeks now and have bid on over 7 instruments from different sellers. I get beat out at the very last nanosecond every single time. Are these auctions rigged? Or does someone actually sit - on every auction - with their finger hovering over the bid button...and they all have faster internet than I do?

The varnish seems to have alot of wear, but no scratches. Which leads me to think it was either touched up, or the varnish was redone and antiqued. Under the chinrest (where it should be), the wear and lack of varnish seems too neat/perfect. (I could be totally wrong here, though) Thank You.
