  2. Thanks a lot for confirming and providing additional details. Although the only label was for the soundpost, it seems like it was indeed a good indication of the origin of the violin. Ok, that makes sense.
  3. Hello, I would like to know more about my 4/4 violin. - Question 1: My guess is that it is an instrument made in Germany, in the Vogtland area during, or after, the 1920’s. There is a label inside in German saying it was (although it is not anymore!) fitted with a “Rekordstimme”. It is a patented soundpost made by someone named Ernest Paul Todt; the invention has been previously mentioned by @Blank face in an old post. I have found that the patent dated 1922, and that Todt owned a musical instrument shop in the town of Erlbach. After reading few threads on MN, I think my violin is from the Vogtland region in Germany. It seems like most violins sold in Germany at that time were mass-produced there, right? Could you tell me whether the pictures are in agreement with my hypothesis (Vogtland and 1920's or later)? - Question 2: I believe that a lot of violins are made in the spirit of the work of famous violin makers, that is why a lot of old cheap violins are labelled for instance Stradivarius. I am very interested in knowing whether you can find similarity between my violin and a well-known violin “pattern”. Also, I would like to learn more about such “patterns”. What are the sound characteristics of the violins built following these famous designs? Are there any online resources with good explanations for someone who is not an expert? Obviously I am not saying that a copy of a Stradivarius will sound like a Stradivarius, but there must be certain designs that give the violin certain qualities (e.g. more projection or a “deeper” sound, etc…). Admittedly I could be completely wrong about this… Thank you in advance

    Thanks for offering to give tailored advice. I am playing for myself, and the neighbours I guess ;-) I played, as a child, the violin for around 3 years, and the viola for another 3 years. My level was intermediate/advanced I think (I attended conservatoire). After almost 30 years of not playing at all, I decided to restart playing the violin few months ago. I am far from the level I used to play at, but I have no problem with intonation or basic bowing. This means I can focus on tone as well as improving my technique. I am trying to make my violin sound as good as possible, however my budget is limited. I am currently using a set of pirastro tonica strings, but I know it is not unusual to fit an E string of a different type/brand.

    Hello, I am new here and not 100% sure this post is supposed to belong to this forum. I would be interested in knowing what brand of E strings you are using for playing classical, or baroque, music on your violin. Maybe there are already threads or other resources on this topic, if yes, could you share the link(s) please? Also, have you ever noticed a change in tone, specific to the E string, after adjusting the soundpost or fitting a new bridge? Would that help with a E string that sounds a little loud/shrill? Cheers

  9. @Wood Butcher, @Violadamore and @Brad Dorsey Thank you for your messages. I think you are right, and I mislabelled this as a crack while it looks more like a centre joint opening. I have contacted the luthier and they will look at my instrument next week. Thank you again for your advice. I like that violin, so I am crossing my fingers that I will get reassuring news. When I said that this instrument "sounded better than my stentor student 2", it really did not do it justice. The sound of the G string is very very nice. I am really happy with the tone. I don't mean to say that the stentor student violins are awful. I purchased one because I wanted to play again after many years, and it inspired me to play more! I use to play the violin and viola as a child, when dominant strings were cheap ;-) But that is off topic (my apologies to the moderators for my rambling post). This is a new picture showing the possible centre joint opening. I have not tried to "mess with it" (sorry for the non-technical vocabulary!) to confirm, as I think I should leave that to the experts for now! (sorry about all the dust, I have not had the time to give the instrument a good clean yet)
  10. Thank you both for your replies, and thank you moderators for approving my previous posts. First, I am a she. Second, I am a bit less concerned about the look of the fingerboard and varnish now that I found a crack on the violin! What a shame. It is not visible on the picture but there is a hairline crack right in the middle of the violin between the bridge and the tail piece. It does not move/open when I very gently press with my finger but I am pretty sure there is something... I am so sad. The tone of this violin (from the label it looks like a vintage German instrument) is so much better than the one of my stentor student 2... I think cracks are tricky to fix and, if I understand correctly, are only worth the money and effort for the more expensive instruments (or those with sentimental value)
  11. Hello, I have just acquired a second hand violin (maybe you have seen my previous post earlier today), and the varnish has a strange texture near the bridge. I have also noticed that the fingerboard is a bit "grainy" and shiny near the bridge. Do you reckon it is damage caused by rosin, or maybe by someone trying to clean rosin build-up? Can I do something to make it look better? I never had this problem with the violins I played in the past (probably because I cleaned them every time I put them back in their case!) Sorry if my questions sound naive, and thank you for any advice you can give me. Here is a picture.
  12. Thank you so much for your replies. I am glad to hear that it is not serious and can be easily fixed by a luthier. Also, to Don Noon, thank you for your advice. I hope the luthier will agree to do the repairs on my violin... I really don't want to offend him/her.
  13. Hello, I have just acquired a violin from eBay. It is definitely playable and has not been damaged in transit (phew!), but I have noticed that one of the corner is starting to get unglued. The gap is tiny and I am not sure whether you can see it clearly on the picture I took (see top corner). Does this need to be repaired? If yes, can it wait to be repaired and can I safely play in the meantime (I don't want to cause more damage)? If yes, can the luthier inject glue? or does the top needs to be removed and glued again??? Is it an expensive repair? I know prices can very form one city to another, but is it more expensive than fitting a new bridge for instance? I did not pay a lot for the instrument and I cannot spend a lot on repairs Thank you in advance for your advice
