  1. I'm unqualified to comment on your particular instrument, but I always figured mass production would, through a sheer numbers game, make at least one good instrument accidentally.
  2. Making a joke, Carl. Because all this "X is good because it sounds like Y" is kind of an odd line of thinking, to me. If I could do another pass, maybe it was his resemblance to a cello what was the cause of his greatness.
  3. Careful examination will find Pavarotti's greatness comes from how similar he sounds like a cello.
  4. Extending your question, is arching height alone that valuable/predictive a variable? I'm about a third of the way through building my first one, so I don't know anything, but it seems like you could have a host of different arching shapes with the same highest point.
  5. I don't think that tracks. Controlling for a variable isn't the same as showing that variable has no effect, just that other variables have effect outside of the effect of the controlled variable. One of the better empiricists might correct me.
  6. I like the "carved off a third-hand description of a lion from a seaman" look, personally. It's a charm of the era.
  7. I've always wondered if it didn't have to do with an increase in ensemble playing/size of the ensemble. The thinking being that your neighbor can cover the bits you can't. A wild guess.
