  1. Thanks everyone! I was told today that the violin was brought from France to Brazil and a luthier fully restored it. I am going to see it tonight. Martin - I will also measure as you suggest. Thanks I’ve also attached pictures of the violin case - it looks very nice too. Additional $75 but seems in great shape too.
  2. Greetings! My son needs to upgrade from a 1/2 to a 3/4 size violin. His first violin was a cheap amazon model and he has been practicing diligently. i happen to be in Brazil on business and a coworker recommended buying an antique violin locally which was restored. On the local classifieds, there is an early 1900s Leon Bernardel available for <$500. I’ve attached pics that were sent to me. Unfortunately I can’t play violin so this would be a buy and see what happens when my son tries it. I know it’s not a huge amount of money, but if any of the maestros here could advise if there is anything negative that jumps out at them from the attached pics, I would appreciate it. I figure if it’s old and the wood is good quality and it has that ‘appeal’ my son would continue to enjoy practicing and it’s worth the risk.. or would it just be better to put the few hundred into a proven student violin? any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
